Barrel Band on 10/22 Carbine

Hi All, I recently picked up a replacement stock for my 10/22 carbine. I want to do something with the old one, mainly refinish it. I wanted to know is the barrel band
on the carbine really necessary as I was thinking of cutting the stock around that point.

Some like them...some don't.
It's all up to the individual.
Plus...If you cut the tip off and don't like it, replacement stocks are easy to find.
