Barrel Blocks... School me

I am interested in building a custom tactical style stock and the more I look at barrel blocks the more I like the idea. I realize they seem to be favoured, or used more often on longer barreled F class type rifles.
Basically I want to know or hear peoples experiences with them. Whether you think you it would hinder performance if used on an already stiff short (20-22) barrel. What peoples thoughts are as far material (aluminum or steel) as well as minimum length and overall size required.

Unless you plan on sustained fire, the extra weight and complexity is not likely worth it.
