I know it's been talked about before so sorry !
Got a new old rifle. An original Win 86 receiver and had a brand new barrel put on it in 45-70 cal. It's a custom job. What's the best way to break it in ?.
Should I start with light loads or doesn't matter.Clean barrel after every shot for the first 100 rds or so ?.This is the first rifle I've had " new " so just want to do things the proper way. It'll be my deer doggin' rifle and maybe moose as well.
Thanks !

I just shoot and clean when accuracy drops off. Some new barrels will foul a bit more when new but most are clean shooters especially the hand lapped ones from the get go in my experience.

oh boy i didnt think id see this in the hunting section!

head on over to the latest thread in precision rifles and have a read! not enough info for you there, search the P.R section for break in and read any of the 100s of threads about it!

HERE

With modern metallurgy I'd sure be disappointed if custom barrel makers required something from the shooter to make their barrels work to proper standards.

Actually, i would feel ripped off. Edit: that is, if I needed to perform some special ritualistic cleaning for the first x number of shots before it worked "properly".

Wait, custom barrel or not, there's no excuse in making a crap barrel now days unless it's made in a jungle clearing !!!
