I have an 870 wingmaster in 2 3/4 and I was wondering if the reciever is strong enough to switch the barrel out to a 3 inch barrel?

870 2 3/4 to 3

Remington 870 bolts lock onto the barrel extension not the receiver, so receiver strength is not the issue. If that were the case the acceptable ammuntition would be marked on the receiver not the barrel
Magnum receivers have the 3 '' ejector and older standard receivers have the 2 3/4" ejector, rivited to the left side of the receiver It is this ejector that is the real issue. It would need to be changed out for the proper one.
Do not quote me but last time I was at remington (quite some time ago) I thought they said all current production barrels were going to be chambered for 3 inch shells.

Biggest issue is to ensure that the barrel and the ammuntion used match.
the ejector is correct and the headspace is correct.

It is OK, but just don't fire 3" shells.

You need to have the ejector replace, but if the shooty is a very early 870, then the ejection port will be smaller and still cannot fire 3".

RePete.

Strength is not a problem. It is not well known but when 3 inch ammuntion first came on the market they were very concerned about people putting a 3 inch shell in a 2 and 3/4 inch barrel and blowing it up............ so they made all 3 inch ammo safe enough that it would not blow up a 2 & 3/4 inch gun.

It isn't wise to fire 3 inch shells in a shorter chamber, the pressures will be higher, the pattern distorted, the recoil considerably more, and eventually the gun may be damaged.

All manufacturers will tell you not to. Simple liability.

I have seen some 870's function with 3 inch shells in a 3 inch barrel... others have an ejection problem previously described.
