I've got a rem 700 sps-v (remington varmint contour barrel) which sits in a Bell and Carlson v/t medalist stock. I want to upgrade to an aftermarket barrel, and was wondering if the barrel channel can be easily opened up on this stock to allow for a larger barrel.

I checked on the Bell & carlson to see exactly what this stock was made of, and I quote "Bell and Carlson stocks are constructed using a "hand lay-up" process, using a variety of "composite" materials. These composites, including fiberglass, aramid fibers, graphite, epoxy gel coats and laminating resins; and polyurethane reinforcement with milled fiberglass..."

I've opened up a few wooden stocks in the past with ease to allow for a larger barrel channel, but I'm unfamiliar with these types of stocks. Can this be done? if so, is it the same as a wooden stock, sand and seal?

I Would like to be able to fit a Krieger #17 contour once I was done.

Grinding out the composite is messy but easy enough to do. NO worse to work with then wood, just a whole lot more toxic - no sniffy the dusty.

Before you get started measure the width of the barrel, the width of the stock and the gap you will need. I really don't think you will be able to widen the channel without thinning the edge of the stock to a knief edge. Then the composite will not be strong enough and look kind of silly too.

Unless you add material to the outside side of the forend....

Goose,

It is no problem at all. I can suggest a good gunsmith that an do the install and open up the barrel channel.

Option B is the fact that Krieger does make a Remington Varmint contour, but I like the #17 too. Lots of barrel left over to set-back when the time comes.
