Barrel channel mods on Hogue stock

Looking at opening up a barrel channel on a rubberized Hogue stock to go from regular tapered 10/22 barrel to accept a "mid" contour barrel. (not the .920) Any ideas how I could go about this? Was thinking drum sanding with drill to open it up...
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Not much control with this method. I can see the sanding drum grabbing and flipping out of the channel resulting in sanding marks where you don't want them. I would suggest a wooden dowel wrapped with course sand paper and going about it lengthwise.
