Barrel Cleaning - Boresnake

The pull cords break away from the the main part. Not the firwt time this has been discussed amongst gunsmiths.
Cat

I understand that the pull cord breaks away from the main part. However, the main part is long enough to pull it out by the end part not by the front part where the break occurs.

My bore snake rope or main part(not the pull string) is just over 27 inches long. So if the pull string breaks away even at the end of the barrel, there is still rope sticking out from the other side of the barrel to pull it back out.

Using a bore snake to clean a rifle bore is much like using a hula hoop to wipe your butt.

You really don’t get things clean, but you do a good job of smearing crap all over the place.

Or maybe you do not know how to use either…people all over the world have been using bore snakes for many, maaaany years with good results.

Some folks like to use bore snake and some folks like to use cleaning rods…

Some folks like to use clean socks and some folks like when their feet stink…

Different strokes for different folks…

Was in Cambodian tire today and the sales associate was selling him all this garbage and telling him to get bore snakes for all of his rifles. The gentlemen asking questions was obviously new and I couldn’t help but eavesdrop.. after the sales associate walked away I told him he should put the bore snakes away and buy the proper brushes for the calibres he needs and get himself a bottle of ballistol.. he was quite thankful.

If you really want to have fun...suggest WD 40 to service, clean and /or lube firearms... wow...that is another fun one. Gonna find out whom 'gets out of the shower to pee' when the boresnake topic comes up as well.
I have used a boresnake on 30+ caliber milsurps ... threw it in a wash bag and in the washer. But something tells me that calibers smaller than that are gonna break and pile up...
Somewhere in Dad's stuff there is a 22 caliber snake...but not a fluffy one. It is a braided ( square 4, I braided it as a kid...that took a little bit of braiding IIRC) one made of high strength waxed thread... doesn't wipe the bore with the cord... just serves as a method of dragging the brush through.
But each to their own I suspect.

Used bore snakes on 22’s, .270’s, 30’s of all sorts, long and short and never had an issue. At the range I sometimes verify the quality of the job with a patch thru the bore and they come out clean.

Of course, bore snake is not a magic “cure all”. At home I still take my fire arms apart and clean it all.

Bore snakes are only a supplement to a complete gun cleaning and are made for a single purpose and you still need a more diverse cleaning kit to get a complete cleaning inside the frame, slide and barrel.

Bore snakes do not damage your bore, or anything else if used properly. Nothing on the bore snake is tougher/made out of harder material than the barrel. Even tiny particles of brass will not damage anything. After all brushes are made of brass and or nylon strings…

I do not care what folks use to clean or even if they clean at all, but facts are facts and one cant argue with ‘em.

Or maybe you should take a borescope to those supposedly clean barrels cleaned with those wonderful bore snakes, I have and the proof is in the seeing.

When the top competitive shooters start using bore snakes instead of rods and patches, I will consider using bore snakes myself.

You’re gonna have to drag better bait behind the boat….

You are funny…

Well, maybe not that funny but seems as you ran out of steam tonight. Better luck next time with you replies, I hope you can do better…you can always pm me if you are having troubles, I am willing to help a fellow CGNer ;)

Remember, I am rooting for ya…

Good night for now and I hope you dream of bore snakes and cleaning rods and this forum lol

Exactly ! If your bore is plugged with mud or snow it’s pretty hard to push it out with a rope ! RJ

RJ... I don't think most folks here are packing a ramrod when cruising about in the snow and mud.
Idiots whom rock Milsurp perhaps...like me...but even most milsurps don't even have a full length rod. Not like WW2 where 3 soldiers all brought forth their little section of rod to build a full length one. If a fellow just happens to have a segmented rod in their backpack... I'm kinda gonna be standoffish...I'm just not wired that tight myself.
Guys whom will not use anything but a rod...generally are not going to find themselves with a plugged bore. Pretty sure they would go facedown in the mud and snow before chancing driving their muzzle into mother nature's 'where the sun don't shine'.
Not salty, not meaning to offend... just an opinion.

I always hunt with my rifles muzzle covered with electrical tape, so very unlikely
that I would ever need a rod to unplug it. I wrap enough tape around the barrel so
I can put a new cover on the barrel after it has been fired. Dave.
