Not what they claim. Small particles, etc, are what you clean out with a bore snake. If you are unfortunate enough to actually plug your bore you have bigger issues. Hey, maybe you could shoot it clear. I have met a few of those guys too. - dan
What wd40 on the bore snake not good enough for you?
And the same people that use it to clean bores ,often use WD40 on their triggers.
So here is one for you, I have a Husqvarna that has been modified( really well done work) to a 20” full stock carbine, 9.3x62, the crown is not even all around the muzzle, the barrel is far from behind perfect, and yet I can make it group under 3/4” at 100m…. I mean this is not benchrest accuracy but not bad for a rifle I paid $750 that is most likely over 50 years old…. I’ve used bore snake a bit on all my rifles and so far, touching wood, didn’t see a difference in accuracy, most of them being all around 1 moa, some even less!
Im pretty sure youre the one speaking from experience since you went there so quick. Anyone claiming to clean a plugged bore or the benefits of a boresnake are obviously not true rifleman. Theyre a piss poor way of cleaning any gun and will never clear an obstruction. Put a clean patch on a proper fitting rod and pass it thru the barrel and see the sh-t thats on the patch. OOH and now im gonna pass that thru the barrel again and again but pour different s- it on the snake and pass it thru with the the same crap it picked up on the first pass plus the gravy you added. YEP ur a real hero and havent a ####i+N clue how to maintain a firearm even with all ur military buddies experiences.

I have yet to hear a good explanation why a bore snake will drag metal chunks or dust particulates down your barrel and ruin it but a bullet moving at 1000-4000 fps won't.
Also, don't use bore snakes where the braided section is shorter than your barrel. If they're longer you can always pull one end out.
I've read many of these "do bore snakes damage your bore" threads and it always seems like it comes down to:
Bore snakes work to do a quick clean.
Bore snakes can break if used incorrectly.
A rod and patch is the best to do a full clean.
None of the other claims hold up for me. As with most tools, if you use them with half a brain they won't destroy your gun or accuracy. I didn't think I'd see guys cutting camo tape off of a $1800 gun with an olfa knife but some guys just don't seem to grasp common sense as much a the rest of us.

I hunt more than I shoot and bore snakes have served me just fine. So end of season one pass thru with G96 and that's it. For a proper deep clean, especially on a new to me gun nothing beats a one piece rod and brush. Once the patches come out clean it's good to go
