Barrel cutting

I know that you cannot cut your own barrel shorter then 18.5" but you are able to buy shorter ones. My question is can you have a gunsmith shorten your barrel below 18.5"?

Overall length of firearm has to be greater than 26 in or it will be restricted .

Actually, you cannot cut a barrel shorter than 457mm (17.99"). The 18.5" limit (470mm is the actual number in the criminal code) is to keep a semi-auto centerfire non-restricted.

I and I think others just stick to 18.5" to give yourself an extra .5" just to be safe in case you f it up!!!

Hmmm Just so I am 100% clear on this.. I was thinking of cutting the barrel down to 13 inchs on my winchester defender pump.

Even tho the gun is well over 26" this would still be a bad move because the barrel was not factory made to that size and would make it illegal?

Correct. That would make it prohibited. If winchester made a shorter barrel, thats ok, but you can't cut one down yourself.
