barrel diffrences

so im wanting to build a new rifle
and im wondering the differences between a gain twist and a regular twist
a button cut and a non button cut barrel
mostly a smith vs a gillard
and also what do you think about a 6mm/06 AI
for varmint ( I live in the windy country and need a 75grn bullet or more at a high rate of speed)

I've owned barrels from both makers, and IMHO you will have a top quality barrel either way.

If you want a long range outfit, your new barrel should have a fast twist to stabilize those long 6mm match bullets. I have a high quality 1:10, that will not shoot 107 gr. Sierra MK's. If you get the long range bug and want to try 115 gr VLD's I think you will want a 1:7.

The 6-06 has similar capacity to the 6-284, yet the 6-284 seems to have a larger following, but perhaps just because it's newer. The added capacity of the 6-06 might give you a small advantage over the .243 Winchester when you shoot the heavy bullets, but there are some serious disadvantages I would consider.

Barrel life will be shorter, and some competitors bemoan the short barrel life of the .243. Even if you make your cases from .25-06's you will have some trouble to go to, and even after going to all that trouble run the risk of ending up with a case that is inferior to the .243 cases made by Lapua.

If it was my money, I would build a .243 Winchester.

I use a 240 Gibbs (think 6mm-06 maximumally improved), out of a Ron Smith gain twist barrel. Very accurate rifle. Brass making is a bit of a hassle, but it shoots, very, very flat, and you can do some pretty amazing things with 105 gr Amax's at 3300 fps or so. - dan

Im planning on using the 75 grn vmax (thats what i use in my 25 06) but the bc would be better and should still be 3700 fps (getting 3650 fps out of my 25 06 not ai )

what are you doing to make the brass and whats the diffrence in the gibbs between the AI
and also whats so good about a gain twist barrel
