Is it possible to get an extended barrel for a Smith & Wesson model 39-2 handgun? One that would make it restricted and not prohibited.

Smith & Wesson don't have extended barrels, but Bar-Sto make them, good luck getting one from the states any time soon. I also found a couple of other makers, same problem. You would think it would be worthwhile, given the number of 39's & 59's in Canada that people would like to buy from the owners if they weren't 12-6. I don't know how much is involved in fitting these barrels, so that has to be added into the cost. I was looking for a cheap semi for CRFSC. This is not going to be cheap.

Irv at BarSto stopped making custom length S&W barrels over a year ago. We used to buy them from him for the 5946/5906 models. At the time they sold for @ $289.00 Canadian plus the cost to have them "fit" to the gun.

I'm not aware of any of the US companies making them any longer... just not enough of a market for them to do it. Cost to have someone make you a "one-off" would be much more than it's worth.

Is there any way to have the current barrel extended?

Once upon a time, a silver soldered extention would have been fine. Later on, a fully rifled extention could have passed the test.

Today, nothing but a one piece barrel seems to comply.

There is a very slim possibility of extending this barrel, but I suspect the only gunsmith in Canada who might conscider it would be Barry at Bits and Pieces.

The biggest problem with making a barrel for the S&W is the chamber end. Taking a barrel blank and cutting the intricate cuts that are needed would be very costly in time.

Barry might be able to cut off the origional barrel where it exits the chamber block, mill it out inside, and turn and thread a barrel blank to replace the rifled portion.

It isn't an uncommon practice for gun companies to make thier own barrels this way. I know Springfield 1911 barrels and Sig barrels have been made this way.
