I was going to build a budget S/S lightweight .260 Rem. I got a take off Mtn countour barrel and a Ti take off stock and I'm looking for a donor action. But as a typical Gunnutz I started thinking (which can sometime be dangerous and/or expensive:D). I always wanted a fluted barrel just 'cause they look cool so maybe while I'm at it I could spend the extra bucks and get a new fluted tube instead. A fluted barrel needs to be bigger to account for the flutes. My question is, can I get a fluted .260 barrel that will be as light as my mountain contour take off (2.0 Lbs on my digital fish scale)?

"...take off Mtn contour barrel..." Off what? Youe best bet would be to find the same action the barrel came off. Mind yoo, finding just an action won't be easy nor cheap.
You could sell the barrel you have and put the money towards a fluted barrel. A new barrel won't be cheap.

I though my post was clear enough, maybe it wasn't. The .260 mountain contour barrel and the Ti take off stock would indicate that it's going to be for a Remington 700 action. By donnor action, I meant a short action stainless Rem 700 rifle of the same cartridge family that I can take the barrel off and have mine installed instead. By saying I could spend the extra bucks and get a fluted barrel I meant I could spend the extra bucks and get a fluted barrel instead. I know the cost of a new barrel, this is not my first build.:D:sniper:

OK, what's the muzzle diameter of the barrel at 22"? Perhaps you can flute the barrel you have. Other then that, you're either going to have to do a lot of math to figure out the weight of the material removed in fluting (and it's really not much, I have a couple of fluted barrels on rifles, I agree, they are cool looking), or contact the various barrel builders to see what the weight differences are (and whether they will flute, and how deep/many). Sorry I can't be more specific, I just see a lot of variables that have to be pinned down before accurate weights can be quoted. - dan

The muzzle diameter is already 0.550 so it's already very light and not suitable to fluting. I would have to go with at least the next size up for fluting. I just don't know if even with the fluting it would bring me back to the original weight of the barrel I already have. Your probably right, only the barrel makers would be able to give me the right answer. Thanks.

If you go to .600 in muzzle diameter and flute to a depth of .050, you might come close depending on the size of the barrel behind the fluted portion and the configuration of the flutes. I view fluting as a primarily cosmetic excercise. Regards, Bill.

Thanks Bill, good to get info from somebody with experience. I agree, I want the flute just for the cool factor but trying to keep it as light as possible.

FWIW, the build I did last year included a fluted barrel. This is a carry rig that I hunt with and I have found the fluting a pain to keep clean. If I had it do all over again I would have gone with one size lighter barrel contour and skipped the fluting.

Yeah, but you wouldn't look as cool carying your rifle without the flutes!:p Something to consider, thanks.
