Barrel fluting

Does a fluted barrel effect accuracy or effect the amount of rounds a barrel can handle before needing to be replaced? I want a rifle I can shoot a lot of rounds through, without worrying about it getting too hot but I also want to have as light of a rifle as possible.

Re: Does a fluted barrel effect accuracy
Not that I've heard of, although theoretically because it reduces mass, it should reduce rigidity. Having said that, a lot of folks back when I shot BR would have their barrels fluted to make weight and BR shooters would do NOTHING to impair accuracy.

It depends. The fluting will keep the barrel cooler longer as there is more surface area from which to dissipate heat, but if you continually fire a bunch of rounds in a high performance calibre, you're going to burn out the throat regardless of fluting. ie. .223 WSSM vs. .222 or .22 Hornet, or .300 RUM vs. .308 Winchester, a 7STW vs. a 7x57 or 7mm-08.

Then get a mountain rifle contour in a lower intensity cartridge & space out your shots, especially in +30 weather in the summer.

Just my $0.02.

"As light as possible" is tied to budget. Are you talking Sub 6lb, sub 5lb bare? There is usually at least a $$ grand or two separating the two.

Light rifles take a little more technique to shoot accurately.

What caliber? A 5lb 300 mag won't see many rounds whether you intend to shoot it a lot or not.

And what is "a lot of rounds"?

The caliber I am interested in would be cheap to fire and low to medium recoil. I have had .308 in mind for a long time but 6.5x55 or 6.5 creedmore or possibly 243 would be on the table.

I hunted with 8 pounds with a scope and it was fine, although I am intending to take my rifle out on longer excursions in the future so weight is always a strong factor for me. Caliber would be 6.5x55 swede, 6.5 creedmore, 308 or 243. I am still weighing the options, but I am really price conscious on the ammo portion. Right now I am shooting 270WSM(too much money to have fun with) and 6.5x55 swede(all ammo comes from out of town via internet).

Then check out tikka cerastrat, a cerakoted version of the fluted superlite with a removable muzzle brake. 5.9lbs, 6.5 creed, 270, 308 etc. Not sure about x 55
