Barrel fluting

I do it to once in a while. The thing is IMO only 5 contour or heavier with muzzle not less than 11/16" dia needs to apply. Any thinner barrell and flutting is only good for decoration....

Thats the thing I'm worried about, screwing it up then having to buy another one anyways, maybe I'll start looking for a new one, also might be a chance to try a new cal. :)
Thanks guys

Corlane's in Dawson Cr. fluted this SS PacNor #1 Sporter barrel on a .338 build they did for me...(crappy phone pic)

It looks great, helps shave off a few more ounces and groups under an inch. :dancingbanana:

Nice looking rifle, glad it's a shooter. But I wouldn't have the stones to flute a #1 with a .338 hole running through it.

I'd buy a fluted factory barrel but not flute one after the thing was made. Better to have the flutes before the rifling is cut.

I like the way fluting allows for a thicker barrel profile at the same weight. Whether this allows for better groups, I don't know but I hope so.

Looks nice, I wanna see more of this rifle.

Didn't take long thumper1, only a few weeks for the whole build. I always wanted a .338-06 in a Model 70 Fwt but the Fwt contour barrel is just a tad thin for a .338 bore. The Sporter #1 contour was as light as I could go for this project so I had it fluted to reduce the weight. Finished at 23" the whole package with scope & mounts weighs only a touch over 7lbs with the factory handle.

Thanks for the info. Any idea what the barrel alone weighed before it was screwed onto the action?

R.

I only have 1 rifle with a fluted barrel (factory fluted) and it's my only bolt action rifle which won't consistently shoot better than 3/4 MOA but it's also my best handling rifle. Removing any weight at the front end of a rifle does miracles for handling.

Sorry about the pic, factory Remington 700 CDL SF
