barrel for bear baiting

I will be going bear hunting in northern ont. in a few weeks.
I will be hunting from a stand and baiting.

I will be using a barrel cahined to a tree for the baiting. What do you guys do to the barrle. I have read, bait the barrel then jam the barrle with some large logs, cut a hole in the bottom! No lid on the barrel!

What do you guys do to prep your barrel.

Cut 8" hole in top of barrel. Strap/chain barrel to tree. Put dead fall behind barrel, forcing bears to come in from the front for better shot angles. Fill with goodies. Put heavy logs on top so you know if your barrel has been visited by a bear.

Not to many bear hunters left in the bush so you should have some luck.

Its going to be hard to bait bears at this time of year.

My method for barrel baiting is this.

1/ 45 gal drum with a removable lid and lid clamp

Drill a hole through the clamp and bolt it on the lid after you bait the barrel. Drill a hole and attach a chain in the middle of the bottom of the barrel with a large Bolt inside the barrel to hold the barrel to the tree.

2/ Drill 6 - 3/4 in holes around only the top part of the barrel, (Top 1/4 part)

3/ use Dog Kibble and Mollasses for bait.

This method will last for a good week on a ongoing hitting cycle.

The way you want to bait for a short period time span would be hanging baits.

These baits can be made up with Burrlap bags and hung from a tree off the ground 7-8 feet. These baits will work but scent is going to be your biggest attractor. Bacon grease, cod liver oil, vanallia are products that will give out a constant smell that can be added to the Burrlap bag. Place something like fresh meat scraps in the burrlap with these sorts of scents to soak the material then hang it in an area that bear sight is allready noticed to be fresh.

Make sure it is hung from a good size limb or tree with the tie off in another tree. They will try to climb the tree for the bag..

Its hard to get a bear to come to bait now unless you have had him comeing for a while.They are into the beech & oak nuts.Good luck.DAN>>>

The larger the hole you have in your barrell the quicker the bait disappears. I've found that barrells without lids can be drained in 24 hours if you have multiple bears on your site. Makes for aot of rebaiting. Try Adrian J Hare's method or if you're using larger bait cut a hole in the side of a barrell with a lid on it. A 5 or 6 inch square will be large enough for a bruin to get his paw in, you can stuff a smaller log into that to make the bear work a little and present a good quartering shot. It's getting pretty late for bears, Good Luck.
