Maybe I should have asked the question before I ordered the stock, but... I have replaced the barrel on my 223 VTR with a 20" carbon wrapped match grade stainless barrel. I had bought an HS precision 096 (similar to 5R) stock with the palm swell, and I really don't like the palm swell and it weights 2.5lbs which is a little heavier than I want it to be. The rifle weighs 9lbs with the HS stock Leupold vx4.5-14 with M1, talley lightweights and atlas bipod. The rifle is about 1lb lighter with the carbon wrapped barrel than my VTR barrel with the slabs cut off the 3 sides. The new barrel is same contour. Since I want to add an HS precision DBM, I would like to further reduce the weight of the rifle before I add the DBM. I ordered a B&C alaskan II stock in olive with the full length bedding block. These are supposed to be about 28-30ozs, so 1/2-3/4 lb lighter than HS precision. The barrel is a magnum contour mountain. Since I will have to inlet it to suit my varmint profile barrel, my questions are:
1) are all remington barrels profiled the same from the action through the chamber? If I only have to inlet the straight section of the stock, that would be a little easier
2) I work at a tool shop and can put the barrel in a vise and use a 1" diameter ball cutter to open the channel on a bridgeport (milling machine), is this the best way or would I be better working this more slowly by hand?
3) any idea what the barrel diameter of the magnum mountain contour is at 20"? If the the varmint is around .900" and the mountain is like .500" then I would need to remove about .200" material from the bottom of the channel. Does this sound correct?
4) is it likely that I will hit the aluminum bedding block in the process of removing so much material?
This seems like a half price solution as opposed to a 12 week wait and $500+ for a manners super light, and will weigh about the same in the end. If anyone has experience with this, please help!
Pics will follow of the stock/barrel combo
