Barrel Insert question

There are two S&W revolvers on EE right now that were 12(6) and have bbl. inserts to make them 4 1/4 inch long. This idea is new to me. I have looked into it Google etc and have not obtained a satisfactory answer. For example I can't find a bbl. that would suit a .38 Special size. The picture I got from the seller is small but it looks like a new tip was welded onto the end of the bbl. I am all for a way to convert the 12(6) guns to meet restricted rules as these guns will be worthless and basically crushed when the old 12(6) people die off as near as I can tell. Not to mention the discounted price of the 12(6) guns vs. the restricted guns. I would welcome your advice on this topic, thanks.

Basically the old barrel is drilled out and a new liner that is longer than 105mm is installed. The barrel must be one continuos piece, not welded on.

It's not cheap to do unless your handy. I was quoted $300 to reline a .22

$300 is about the going rate to line a barrel from what I can tell. It isn't cheap but you do get to own a formerly prohib gun and keep one from the crusher, which is a great reason in my books.

What happens at the end of the bbl.? It seems like they welded a stub onto the end of the bbl. after the sight. The bbl. is full size and is extended out after the sight.

I have seen someone put a liner under the original barrel threads on a K frame in 38/357; however, there isn't enough meat to make this work. This was in the gunsmithing forum a while back.

The only way i'd even consider this type of conversion was if the original barrel was turned into a shroud like on a dan wesson and the barrel tube was threaded into the frame, not the shroud... ...think that nowlin used to make some of these for various s&w models.

I would suggest replacing the entire barrel with a custom PPC barrel. Don't know what that would cost but it would definitely look better than a stub sticking out the end of the original barrel.

I've been using a K frame that was modified this way for some time now. Mind you I've only ever shot .38Spl from it. The barrel was extended with a welded on stub and the bore drilled out and lined full length.

I've "only" shot about 3K rounds from it during the various matches and practice nights but so far it's just fine. But I must admit that given the liner work I'm reluctant to shoot it with any .357Mag ammo for the reasons mentioned with the thinning of the threaded stub.

A better way to do this is to start with a longer barrel which is cut down and a new front sight installed.

The little stub off the front end does look a little funky. I've taken to calling my modified 66 "Pinocchio".... :D
