I'm about to order a shilen barrel in 260 rem i know all the detail of what i want except I'm still not sure a 24 or a 22" barrel. The difference is not very big. It's will be for deer hunting mostly.

For wooded or tree stand use maybe go 24". Especially if shot will always be close (under 500 yds). If not then I would go 260AI with a 3B or #4 contour 8 twist. I have always wanted a 260AI. Seeing some very impressive numbers with guys shooting R26 in their 260 AI.

My 260 is in a 22"barrel and shoots great. I use it for PRS matches and would likely get a 26" in the next one to help with speed. If you are using it to shoot deer and just range shooting I would go with the 22". I have a 26" in my 30 Cal and it is just to friggin big to pack around the woods

I have 23 inch barrels on a 260 and a 6.5x55, both hunting rifles, and they are just fine. I used 23 because I couldn't decide between 22 and 24!

I have a .260 that started out at 27" & spit 142 SMKs out at 2770 fps. Super heavy & clunky (heavy varmint profile) I decided to have it cut down....to 21-3/4". To my surprise after a minor load tweak, the velocities only came down to 2710. Accuracy was amazing at 27" & improved - by a very, very slight margin - after being shortened.

Personally, I wouldn't be afraid to go there again.

Remington's HB varmint in 260rem has a 26" barrel; the Remington Model 7 in 260rem has a 20" barrel. I have the former and it shoots well..but I dont think I would take it deer hunting. OTOH..people who have the 20" Model 7 speak well about it. I think of your two choices it boils down to what you like personally for handling/carrying and looks.

My 260 hunter SPS type was cut don to 19” for carrying and hunting deer in Northern Ontario forests. My former 260 M700 Magpul edition from the factory came with a 22” muzzle brake threaded barrel. All metal surfaces were cerakoted nicely. Well done, Remmy!!

I liked the hornady 140 grain SSTs for the deer. And my 700 Magpul Remmy loved the 139 grain Lapus Scenars

The chambering is only a small consideration for barrel length. The bigger part of the mix is the stock style, desired weight, barrel contour, scope size and how the rifle is going to be used.

For example ...... I've had 308s from 18.5" all the way up to 24', all in various sporting rifle forms. All were the right length for the task at hand.
