Barrel length for a .308 hunting rifle?

I have a Rem 700 with a 20" pencil weight barrel. It is light (5.9lbs with scope and 3 rounds in magazine), excellently balanced, enough velocity saved over a shorter barrel to not bother adjusting my trajectory, and it points LIKE MY FINGER. What an amazing gun to have in my stable.

How can it be legal to re barrel a gun with shorter barrel than 18.5 inches?

yes as long as you do not cut down a longer factory barrel. There are a few 16" barrel non restricted bolt actions on the market

20" to 22". A bit less kick (due to added weight) and not as hard on the ears as the shortys

Details on rifle! 5.9 lbs w/ scope and three rounds must make it a hair over 5 lbs by itself.

And 20" barrel in a slightly heavier barrel would make a nice little rifle. If I wanted lighter I would be looking for an old PGW Ti action and a wildcat stock. Then I could go nice and light with the barrel and still have a lively yet lightweight rifle.
