There is an interesting survey on the Remington web site. They are asking which barrel length do you prefer for turkey shotguns.
26....40%
24....29%
22....16%
20....15%
I find it interesting that the 26 inch is leader. I prefer the shorter 20" barrel cause when you add the choke its more like 23.5. What is the preference of you turkey hunters out there?

It's a matter of personal preference. I bet the reason 26" is most popular is that a lot of people have one shotgun to hunt everything with.

So then why are a lot of pumps shipped with 28mod or 30full choke barrels?
I though the turkey barrels were longer and full choke.

Actually the shot guns labeled turkey guns seem to have the shorter barrels. My Remington 870 carries a 21 inch barrel and the super turkey has a 23" barrel.

Great news then. I am just replacing my old 870 I sold 25yrs ago with another gun about the same age. Love them 870s. I have a new Express but I am hearing things about them I dont like so may sell that even tho it has a vent rib barrel. The gun I am getting has a 30in probably full choke barrel. My orig had a 28mod. Plan to get a slug barrel for it and a barrel suitable for turkey so I will follow this thread. Thanks guys. Gobble gobble:)

Personally, for the 2 shots a year you MIGHT get to take against a turkey, proper camo is more important than worrying about barrel length.

I just brought my 28" Wingmaster field gun last time.

The 26" barrel helps the shot and wad to stabalize before reaching the choke which helps the pattern on target. I have a 21" 11-87 3" which shoots well out to 35 yards then opens up. My SBE with a 26" crio barrel will shoot the same group diameter out to about 42 yards. The biggest issues to address for turkey barrels is sudden restrictions and barrel friction. A longer forcing cone...chrome or crio barrel...and top quality extended choke with a slow tapper will produce top patterns. After seeing the newer 870 barrels from Remington....it would be a cold day in hell before I bought another....tooling marks are terrible as is the chamber and forcing cone finish.

Hmmm Chilly, interesting, I love my remington. I regard it as a good rugged weapon. Also I keep my shotgunning down to 35 yards and in for turkey so I should be fine. With my ventilator choke it shoots great groups. Oh well each to their own.

The older Remington barrels seem to be much better than the new...and if you have used the barrel alot, it will have worn any tooling marks down almost smooth. I always recommend using some JB Bore compound in shot gun barrels and finish them with the bore brite. Leaves the bore looking like a mirror and takes out any plastic or carbon fouling. I too have a Remington 11-87 I love and have spent many hours polishing that bore to be like a mirror. This gun has never let me down and continues to impress me...my negative report is strictly regarding NEW Remington barrels

My turkey gun (before I sold it) was a Winchester Defender with the 18" barrel threaded for chokes. I put an extra full from TruGlo in it and it was GREAT! I managed to shoot two turkeys with one shot at close to 50 yards (I paced it at 47).

Aaa, so your saying it the cosmetics more than the functionality. I would have to agree there. As you seem to know, what do you think of these new tac shotguns. They look like they would be great fun. The only think is I think they come fixed bore improved cylinder.

NIce set up Matt, you posted just ahead of me. I too have a saddle mounted red dot with a see through saddle mount.......very nice.
