Mods if this is the wrong place to put this question please move it.

I have an old single shot that I am considering getting the barrel shortened to 16'' from 20. This will put the total gun length at 29 inches.
However I was told this afternoon that this will put it into the prohib class as only factory barrels are allowed to be shorter than 18 inches, even if I get a gunsmith to do the work.
So my question is can I get it shortened or was the "expert" correct.

You can not get it shortened legally.

You can purchase a factory made barrel shorter than 18" or a gun with a barrel shorter than 18" but you can't modify a factory barrel below 18".
Don't say that is stupid because that is self evident, but it is the law.

Bumps

If you buy an aftermarket barrel for say a ruger 10/22 18.5" long and it does not have a barrel length on the barrel or significant identifying marks and you chop it down to 12" who's to say it didn't come that way or was a custom job?

This is actually pointed out on the NFA's web page regarding this matter as an example of how stupid these laws are.

It doesn't matter how stupid they are... if you do as described above... and they lay charges, you will have to prove you purchased a factory barrel made in that length. That would be painful...

As other have stated you can't cut a barrel shorter then 18.5" Evan a registered gunsmith can't cut it under 18.5"
You can have a shorter custom barrel made for you from a register custom barrel manufacture such as Harron Arms and have a gunsmith install it for you
As long as it's not a semi-auto (centre fire) and it is still 26" or longer over all

I'm going throw this Proses myself now I'm having Harron arms make me a 338fed 13"barrel for a NR boult action
I think I will start a new Thread after the new barrel is made hopefully I can get sum one to help me. Post pic
Going to be a handy SBR

18 inches is the minimum if it is not a semi auto...

No you can't cut any rifle shorter then 18 or your up #### creek
You can have a vary short barrel made oly if it's made by a custom barrel Manufacture ther is no other way to do it!
(Semi-auto centre-fire can't be shorter then 18.5 no mater wear you get the barrel)
Thar is no cheep fix you will have to buy a new 16" barrel and have a gunsmith install it

Haahaa I forgot who started this thread sorry guntech
Wen I get my new 13" barrel I will start a new thread and proving what I'm saying
It going to be a NR Savage boult action 13"barrel 338 fed
I'm hoping to find sum one to help me instal my new barrel wen I get it
I will bring in to RCMP and get documentation proving it is NR

so what happens with a 14.5 inch barrel AR15? Are they registered as pistols? What if you throw your .22 chiappa upper on your 'pistol' lower.. is it a rifle now according to CFO? Do you have to re-register it?

AR are restricted no matter how long or shot the barrel just like a hand gun

So how does this apply to all the short barrel AR15's and CSA short barrels (7.5 and 11.5 inches IIRC)? They sure are selling a lot :)

you mean by saying can't be under 18.5 they would be prohib? or restricted?
