Barrel length of Remington 700's

X2!

Unless you face is fatter than Kate Smiths you will loose any hope of getting a decent cheek weld....

X3

Cheek weld trumps all other considerations of scope height. If you want to carry the rifle at the balance try a Scout Scope or a reflex sight. When in very heavy cover, I usually opt to have the rifle in both hands so willow branches don't pull it out of my hands and so that I can point it in the direction of travel.

If you are talking about matching the weight on each rifle why not remove 4-8 oz. off your other gun by drilling some holes in the butt section of your stock, or adding some weight in your other rifle by glassing in some lead shot in the foreend of your lighter rifle? If you are just interested in shortening the barrel for better handling you will lose between 15 and 50 fps in velosity. The 30-06 needs as much help as you can give it as far as barrel length is concerned. Instead of spending a bunch of money with a gunsmith on a rem factory barrel, shoot some good groups with the rifle as is, then chop it yourself at 22.5" at home and touch up the crown with a aluminum oxide globe grinder stone (very slow, very careful). shoot some groups after that, and if you find that the rifle shoots worse, then take it to a qualified smith and he will still have .5 inches to cut a custom crown on the lathe. remember, we are not talking about a four hundred dollar kreiger barrel here.

Ok so I know that the Remington 700 CDL has a 24" barrel in 30-06 and the Remington 700 BDL has a 22" in 30-06.

I own a Remington 700CDL and I wanna cut the barrel down to 22" so in effect it is just like a BDL. My question is could someone who owns a BDL please give me an accurate measurement of their barrel, im sure it is not 22" exact. Please take it from the inside of the step where the chamber/action meets the barrel. Either use inches or cm's please and be as acurate as possible. Thanks

Sell the CDL and buy a 700 mountain rifle with a factory 22" barrel
Light/compact and great looks. I have two of them.
30-06 LSS and a older one blued /walnut in .243 with the dropclip.
I don't like the sounds of cutting the barrel. I would sell it and buy what you want that fits your needs. Just my two cents;)

What is it exactly about cutting a barrel that you don't like the sounds of?
