Barrel Length Opinion

How much weight is in 1" of barrel with a .560 muzzle diameter?

Oh Chuck.
How about you just give the fellow some advice along the lines of what he asked for?
He wants a 6 pound rifle on a Remington action, in 7-08.
What are the opinions on barrel length, 20" or 22"?
How about just giving an answer?
Or, go be more right somewhere else.

You have built many many 6 pound rifles on Remington actions???
Is this where I am supposed to ask you to quit stalking me?
Or, have someone ask if you stole my girlfriend in high school?
Absolutely priceless!!!!

My first comments were to the original poster. Not you. My advice stands and as far as barrel length is concerned with a barrel light enough to make that weight it won't matter much if at all with either length. But take it for what it's worth. I probably haven't had near the custom rifles built that you have I'm sure. With the paltry sum I have built I look for balance, portability, aesthetics, weight, and velocity. In that order.

When targeting a 6 pound all up build, every ounce counts. Anyone that has attempted to build one, knows this. It can be done, on a very reasonable budget, without having to break the bank, so to speak. A full compliment of custom components aren't required.

Paltry sum, indeed.

I lied. You might actually get an ounce. 1.1 ozs if you are lucky. I know that because I've done it and have a bunch of barrel stubs laying around and just weighed one.

I like short rifles I would rather lose a bit in performance for short and handy
Waight wist you can save quite a bit on lightweight scope and lightweight pack seek outdoors frame and packs is between 3 and 4 lbs total
My regular pack is just over 10 lbs wen you think about it Evan if your rifle is 8 lbs and a ultralight pack is a big waight saving

I would go 22".

For 7mm-08 I would go with a 22" barrel over the 20,"...

Even on a "bush rifle" I've never had an issue with longer barrels. An ounce or two of weight just doesn't make that much difference to me.

Get it done at 22" and if you find it too cumbersome cut it back. Cant add inches back on but its a cheap fix to cut it down

My present 30-06 with 22 inch barrel has noticeably less muzzle blast than my previous 30-06 with 20 inch one. Other than that I like both.

All of the above.

No expert here. My two cents are coming from a guy who wears hearing aids...me.
I just don't like the noise from the shorter bbls. Say what you will about handy, ( and carbines are usually WAY handier) the noise factor scares me away from the shorter ones.
Almost anyone who has calluses and wears jeans in this part of the country is hearing impaired...all of them. I'm sorta the the 'One eyed guy' in that I'm more protective of what I've remaining.
Handloading can usually help with a more effective burn...but you better enjoy dycking away some time at the press, the range with a chrono, punching paper to get the formula right. Notice we never include decibels on our reloading notes?
I'd leave a couple extra inches from what seems handiest...easy enough to shorten later. 24" would get my vote.

He asks about barrel length, and you recommend a new pack?...lmao!

Merry Xmas!

I sad I like the shorter barrels than sad if waight is a issue then a lighter pack is the way to go no sence in packing a light rifle and turn around and pack a 10 lbs pack
Thers more weight savings in the pack not by cutting a couple of inches of the rifle barrel
No mater what you need a pack frame to carry out the meat just like you need a sharp knife that's 3 pieces of equipment you have to have no mater what and the pack is wear the biggest weight saving is
A rifle sling can be hooked over the top corner of the pack to disperse the waight on the packboard and not on the shoulder well hunting wen climbing rifle shood be secured tightly to the pack any ways and not on the shoulder
Evan though I prefer shorter barrel rifles I would probably just leave it the way it is unless you're going through some really thick stuff to get into you hunting spot I would not cut the barrel just to save weight

Just to be clear as I noticed in a few replies I was not asking about the length for the weight reduction. I was just wondering if 20 inches would be enough to mkae sure I get everything out of the round or if 22 would be better, I have everything worked out weight wise and have a good idea where im going to be. I appreciate the replies guys, just wanted to clear that up .

I know the effects of barrel length reductions have been studied a lot in the 308. Google willlead you to the studies. My 22"-26" barrels are constantly getting tangled in the thick bush where I hunt. Another 100fps doesn't change my hunting capability.

Oh I see where you're going...then I'll also recommend that he ups his protein intake and gets a couple more cardio sessions in every week.

When considering barrel length, there are several elements to consider. If you are going to an ultralight, or even just a light contour barrel, the shorter the barrel, the stiffer it is, and you potentially have better accuracy than you might with something longer. Once you find a load that shoots in the barrel you install, the question of accuracy vs barrel length is irrelevant. Balance is something that matters, having a real impact on rifle handling, natural pointing, and quickness. A light contour barrel must be longer than a standard weight barrel to offset the weight of the butt; most riflemen prefer a slightly muzzle heavy balance. The next problem is a rifle that is to be used in thick cover benefits from a short barrel. The difference in the velocity between a long and short barrel, doesn't matter very much. If you can hold dead on out to 200 yards, but have to allow for 3 minutes of drop instead of two and a half at 300 yards isn't a game changer.

You'll not point that rifle at anything that will notice the difference from a 2" barrel reduction, especial with bullets in the 120 to 140 grains range, and when talking hand loads. Lapua makes excellent 7-08 brass, and that would be the way to go, when sniffing around for speed.
Build the rifle for function and balance, and everything else will fall into place.

Just to tie everything together, if you were really worried about it, you could always run an AI reamer in there and get your 50fps back...
