Gents, I have a #7 Shillen special select (brownells) that is 28" long(overall length), same length as Rem 700 V contour Lilja barrel I have as well.

My question is this: Why does Lilja claim a finished length of 27" when Shillen says 26" ??

Sorry for my ignorance.

I am always hesitant of answering a question directed at the "pros"...

I would ask the manufacturer just what they mean and why...

Guntech, I really don't think it would pay to pester Shillen or Lilja............although, knowing Dan, he would be more than happy to answer this for me........... when at least 12-15 people here can answer this. I regret putting the word pros in my heading, but just wanted to get some attention. In fact anyone that has chamber a similar barrel knows, and for that matter sunray is likely got it!

Can I milk 27" from a 28" shillen blank, so I don't have to use my 29" Kreiger blank ????

Try it at 27" and if you don't feel the accuracy is good enough cut another 1/2" off. I know you don't need to cut 2 inches off.

Shilen has always been very helpful anytime I have called them.

Lapping barrels causes slightly flared ends and many barrel makers put a mark up from the muzzle end so we remember to cut some off. None have said it takes over an inch to get past the flare but they don't #### around. Gaillard's mark is way up there past an inch but not likely because it HAS to be. Why have headaches? Make a mark where you know darn well its good to go and the phone won't ring. As far as the chamber end goes, your reaming it anyway so there is no requirement to cut some off or even mark it.

You'll likely end up at a finish length less than 1/4" shorter than where your mark is.

thanks guys.........that is excatly what I thought!!!

I am sure I should be questioning my sanity here, but something is begging me to use this shillen tube and save the krieger for the future. For that matter, 26" is likely lots, but.............
