I'm going to be building a 17 Fireball based on a Savage Model 12 LPV and a Shilen barrel. I was thinking of ordering a 20" barrel. Are there any good reasons not to go with this length? Although I will be shooting paper, I wanted it shorter for walking a gopher patch or carrying in a vehicle.

Just like Obtunded said, there is no advantage to going longer, except a tiny increase in velocity; but with a centrefire .17, you won't need an extra 50 fps anyway. In fact, there have been several studies recently that have shown that shorter barrels are inherently more accurate, due to the difference in barrel harmonics.
