I conducted a little experiment in two mossbergs-the only diference was one was a ''carbine length'' 18''barrel and the other was about 6'' longer-but even in CB longs-the longer barrel was noticeably quieter.....I wouldn't have thought it in sub sonic shells but it is

Using CB's in my marlin 39a (24" barrel) all you hear is the hammer dropping. Yet in my 597 it is quite noticeably louder which is only 4" shorter. By the way, the CB's do not cycle the 597. You need to work it manually.

confirmed!

I'm thinking since the majority of sound produced is due to super-sonic ball cracking sound barrier, this experiment could be done to find "loudest length"...it should tie very closely to the "fastest ball" barrel's length.

Fun to experiment, who doesn't like science? I have nothing with a "short barrel" (sub 18nchange inches) but, will def. attest to longer=quieter in the 18"-24" barrel range. Not as easy to notice with CB's as it is with the zippier stuff.

Seriously, firing a CBlong in my Cooey 75 makes 2 distinct sounds...click of action and, thwack of ball's arrival.

None of my semi's will cycle CB's...I got to thinking about putting a smaller spring (or springs in the 597...wonder if I leave one out?) in but, then I think it would have to be "dedicated" to CB's...

based on this experiament its pretty obvious that if you need to dispatch pests without drawing attention, choose a rifle with a longer barrel-even with CB Longs

uh oh...turns out I'm quite mistaken. Used to be think before speaking but, now it should be google before typing!

This quote is stolen from rimfireshooting.c*m

"I don't think you can equate greater noise to higher velocity given that two firearms of different barrel lengths are firing identical cartridges. .22 handguns yield much slower muzzle velocities than their counterpart rifles but the handguns are a great deal louder."

Goes to discuss how close you are to the muzzle...doesn't matter as the pisols are louder in the parking lot etc etc...

Not just the supersonic noise but, pressure remaning in barrel post bullet's departure has an effect...

Any pistol-type folks reading along?

Also seems that 16" is the "magic number" for best .22lr velocites.

I just got my 16" barreled 10 22 so I don't have a lot of input, but prior to my purchase I had read somewhere that 16" was the ticket! I know from the few rounds I have put through it that it is definitely louder. If the weather ever gets better here I will let you know how it does.

16''IS the optimum barrel length for MAXIMUM VELOCITY,but a barrel 8 to 10 '' LONGER will be QUIETER,albeit slightly LOWER velocity.I guess it all depends on what you want- a short easy to handle .22-or something LONGER you can shoot QUIETLY

When I did this test....

I really was curious about the noise difference the barrels would have. However without any testing equipment I could not tell the difference. In theory the shorter barrel should have been louder but I really couldn't tell if one was louder than the other just by my (protected) ear.

I know the semi-auto is louder than a bolt gun, and a short barreled revolver is the worst. Not only the short barrel but the cylinder gap as well adds to the noise.

On the farm we have a 26" barreled bolt gun in .22 rimfire. Its really mild when using sub sonics or standard velocity rounds. The exact same ammo in my fathers 12.6 shorty revolver is brutal, even with protection.
