Barrel lengths on AR15

I have a 20" and a 10.5", one for SR and one for SR CQB. If I was starting out with AR's I would get a 16" gov't contour or a 14.5" medium contour barrel and just use one for both. Having said that, using the 10.5" for CQB is a lot of fun! So get both!

Helpful post, I know...... how about pictures to make up for it?:D

If you can have two uppers that is the way to go. 10.5 is a ton of fun for short range work but lacks at longer range.

My current AR is a 14.5 Noveske Basic, I am in the market for a 10.5,most likely a Noveske too, The MORAL of the story is get both lenghts, it doesnt have to be together onec, maybe one upper at a time/year.

I fricken LOVE IT when people who can only use a rifle on a range start talking about velocity drop and lethality in a short barrel. It makes my day hearing foolishness like that. :D

OP. buy whatever barrel length you want. It makes no difference as you will never shoot your rifle at anything but paper in this country and trust me, paper doesn't care how fast the bullet is traveling.

Ya never know what'll happen. Can you honestly predict the future is going to be all roses all the time? ANYTHING could happen. Likely, no. Possible, yes.

14.5 1 in 7 twist is what the army selected due to versatility. Short and handy enough for CQB, still enough to push a bullet fast enough to achieve fragmentation in targets at 300 meters. FWIW

I have an 14.5 and 10.5

For target shooting no difference. Only a bigger flash and bang with the 10.5. Buy whatever you want or whatever look "cool" for you.

This info is really useful for me as I am building my first AR (and it'll be my first one as well). I think it's come down to the hard fact that I need both...

Thanks guys....now I have to buy 1 ar's instead of just the 16" one I was going to get this week....my bank acount thanks you...lol

I would have to agree 16” is the best compromise between a 10.5” and a 20”… That being said my 10.5” is so bad a$$ I love it to death… lol… really doesn’t matter when the range only goes to 200m, so I generally stick to the 10.5” and the 16” barrel sits lonely on a shelf…

Edit: I bought one as my only now have 3, working on 4... maybe 5...
