The 308 is questionable @ 1000 , the 6.5/284 has a voracious appetite for stainless steel
Why does everyone seem to think the .308 is a short range cartridge? I have very inexperienced shooting friends who refer to the .308 win as a "bush gun". That drives me nuts.
xring assasin said:I've simply never even considered a 270 cal just because the bullet selection for it is a bit lacking....it's one of my favorite deer/elk guns though. I would LOVE to see a 270cal 164/166-ish grain bullet hit the market...THEN I would LOVE to take it for a whirl - mostly because it'd be different - even though it would essentially be what I consider "reinventing the wheel".
Will the 270 erode as quickly as the 6.5/284 ? Or what cal. will have the longer barrel life for long range use.

Ian, please do not post any more pics of guys lying on their backs shooting rifles with a towel draped over their leg.
People are gonna think all us Brits are retarded.![]()
I loved the deer stalker cap!!
If you use the 284 Win Case. What is the best caliber 6m, 6.5mm, 7mm, and 30 cal. I'm guessing the 6.5 or 7mm. I belive these two will out perform anything else, in this case. All other things being equal.
There is a sport in the UK called "Match Rifle" that is shot with 308 rifles exclusively. It is shot at distances of up to 1200 METERS! It is often shot "Creedmore" style, which is withyour feet towards the target, and stabilizing the gun with your foot. I $hit thee not.

The 308 cartridge, with the right load and bullet is more than capable of being accurate beyond 1000 yards!!!!!!! Guys that say otherwise are clearly not long distance competitive shooters.
If you look in the precision rifle forum, you will note that Matrix Bullets of BC, has done exactly that. 165 and 175 ultra low-drag 270/6.8mm bullets.
They will require a tight twist (1:8)
This is the [problem with coming out with a new bullet like that, particularly in Canada. The hardware has to be re-designed because 277 cal has always been regarded as just a hunting calibre. It has HUGE potential and fills a very big void between 264 and 284 calibres
Dan is right. try the 154 scenar, 155 SMK (#2156) or Berger 155.5 grain "fullbore" or "Palma" bullets in your rifle and I suggest Varget as a terrific go-to powder that works in all temperatures. You should be able to achieve velocities of somewhere around 2900 in that barrel; the length is not a big issue. At 2900 fps (an easy velocity to achieve with these bullets) you will be supersonic at 1000 yards, in fact, although it will be a grunt, you will be transonic at 1200 yards!
It is pretty cool that you are thinking about cross-discipline shooting; your rifle will make a great F-Class (FTR) rifle
The other good thing is the 308 is an easy cartridge to load and make work; if you are not currently reloading, you picked a good way to get started.
