Barrel life span estimate

I have a lot of 30rd mags and also cans and select fire lowers, and I can tell you even with a mag loading fixture - its a #####.

We shot 25k last week for a program, and even with 4 guys shooting, it wears on you...

LMT is MilSpec barrel - so its a good barrel, but not the best.

I think we (KAC/KMC) are the only company offering Colt Canada barrels to the public, but I may be wrong.

I do know Colt will be doing these barrels in all their production in the future from what I am told, both Military (US) and commercial sales.

Hmmmn, considering that the Gov't o'Can owns the machine, I wonder what kind of kick-back the ### is getting?

How is Colt getting around the "sporting use" aspect of US law for barrel imports? :stirthepot2:

Diemaco/Colt Canada barrels are the high range of the milspec allowed steels in 5.56mm barrels.
They are Chrome Moly Vandium steel, add in the chrome lining, and those barrels last much longer than other barrels.

Since chrome actually bonds with the underlying steel a better steel underneath will result in a longer lasting chrome barrel.

Depending on firing schedule, a good barrel in 5.56mm will last to 20k

An excellent barrel (outside the Milspec for the M16FOW) can last to 30k

A regular Milspec steel barrel is good for maybe 10k...

That is conversative firing schedules.

Colt Canada also uses the 'excellent steel' in the C9 and C6 barrels, and some companies use them in some products.

How does your Diemaco CHF compare to the Noveske N4 FN CHF . Is their heavier chrome lining all that its cracked up to be, or is it hype. I assume these start life as M249 barrel blanks

Thanks

I wonder how many mags we would need to replace to keep up with 20k of shooting.

Assume you have 5 mags to start.

Wow, that is a lot of shooting.

Hard to say... You can always stretch out old mag springs to get extra life out of them... I wouldn't recommend it unless you dont have a choice, and I would probably only do it to 30 rnd mags... BUT I did a buddy that told me in the Army they often told them to just stretch out the mag springs if they were having issues and put them back in...

Still, I have no idea...

TRG-42, not sure I know FN uses the 'better' steel on the M240 barrel, but not the 249. However I am not sure of the effect of the double chroming for lifespan.

The barrel blanks are just that chmabered blanks -- not finished barrels, so that makes them U.S. made then they are finished down here.

The US spec for M249 called for a min. barrel life of 15,000 rounds - the testing is done in a 260 round cycle at an average rate of 85rd/min in 5-7round bursts. Aftter each cycle, the barrel is let cool to a level that is comfortable to handle with barehands.

Basicly, about 50 bursts in 3 sec interval for 3 mintues........repeating the cycle 57.6 times
