Barrel Life?

You probably won't wear that 270 barrel out for a long, long time. It would take 2500+ rounds to show serious throat wear, and that, my friend, is a lot of shooting. If you use it for hunting, I would avoid the heavy barrel. It will feel like about 25 lbs after toting it around all day, heavier still if mountains are involved in the packing. Regards, Eagleye.

I see serious throat erosion in 1000 rounds although hunting accuracy will still be okay.
I see more damage at the muzzle from dust or debris in the barrel when it is fired. That causes more accuracy loss than the throat erosion.
Clean it using proper techniques, protect the muzzle and it will last quite some time.

Centerfire cartridges 6mm and larger with powder charges 1/3rd or less of their bullet weight seem to have the longest barrel life. When bullet weights drops below 100 grs, the formula doesn't work out so well, but 32 gr of powder seems to be optimal for .224 bore rifles across the bullet weight available. If we consider a .243 with an 80 gr bullet and 40 grs of powder, we can expect the barrel life to be not so good. Conversely a 6 PPC with a maximum load of 25 grs has pretty good barrel life.
