Barrel maker turn around time

I was wondering what the turn around time of various barrel makers is like. I've heard great things about Rob McLellan but from what my buddy Barks is going through I'm not patient enough to deal with the man.

How about Smith, King, Gaillard et al. - what are their times like from the time you make the call until you have a finished product?

Gaillard, Smith and some others can be a couple of months but Rob has set some records in his time, he has good barrels but you have to be very very very patient. It's your call.

I have used a lot of Gaillard barrels. The wait depends on what caliber he just has started on. He doesn't tool up and make one 22 barrel, one 6mm barrel, one 7mm barrel, etc... if he just finished tooling for batch of 30 cals and they are all spoken for, and he has retooled for something else, it may be a bit longer before he gets back to 30's.

Usually 4 to 6 weeks wait, and the wait is worth it... He usually will let you know when you order.
 
Not trying to hijack this thread but while we're talking about these guys. Do they do any gunsmithing or is it just barrel making?
I want to send my 700 out and have the action blueprinted or trued and have a barrel made for it(how long would that take?). I already have a stock on its way.

I just got off the phone with Rob McLennan and he seems like a really nice guy. I asked him how long it would take to have a barrel made and he said that I'm looking at March so I guess 2-2.5 months. Needless to say I think I'll be shipping my rifle to him soon.
 
Call Douglas, Green Mountain,Lilja, Kreiger, Badger, Hart, Pac-nor, etc....instead of "it will be 3 months(or maybe a year)....you're more likely to hear: "sure how many you need?" I have contacted 2 barrel makers in Canada, and it was the same story.....(I don't do that size or I can't do octagon, I only do one cal. at a time, I only do stainless steel, etc.)...and don't tell me that Hart,Kreiger, Lilja, have never won a BR match, or that Badger has never won a BPCR match, or Green Mtn. has never won a muzzleloader comp....just my opinion, have at 'er.

I agree with you....but theres that little problem will they ship to Canada?...And if they do, the time and cost involved in getting an export permit....:(
 
The best way now is to arrange with gunshop on US side to accept this barrel by mail from manu. and you go down and pick it up......not sure if a barrel blank is a barrel unless chambered...don't really know what rules are...but i think stores in Canada can order from Brownells as they have some kind of blanket permit??? you may have to call around on this but, it is better than waiting a year or more and you don't have to comprimise!!
 
What everyone needs to realize about Canadian barrel makes is that they, I believe, are all one man shops. Volumes in Canada are tiny compared to the US. If I only sold stocks in Canada I would not be in business at all!

Thats a real good way to end up persona non grata in the US as well as incurring HEAVY fines
A barrel is a controlled item, chamber or not.
To legally export it requires import and export documents.
Yah I know guys beat the system all the time.BUT "do ya feel lucky???"
