Barrel not centered in stock??

Just picked up a Rem LTR from EE and I noticed that although the barrel is floated, it's not centered in the HS stock. It's not the first time I've seen that on factory rifles but there's quite a gap on the right side. I pulled the action for inspection and didn't see anything obvious on the aluminum blocks but for fun I put in my LVSF in there. Surprise, the LVSF centers in the stock!?

So I pulled off the mag box off the LVSF, and torqued the action in the LTR stock and it's nice and centered!?!? I don't quite get it? The recoil lug looks straight, the barrel action looks straight and flat when I eyeball it on the kitchen counter.

I'm usually good a figuring stuff out but I might have to drop this one of to the smith to make sure everything is fine before I try to bed it. I guess I could also steal a scope from another rifle and shoot it as it is and see what happens, might gather more clues.

Any suggestions to diagnose the issue?

From your pics. I would say that nothing is wrong with the barrel / action, it's the stock that is out of whack. In the shaping there is more material on one side than the other. Probably not repairable short of another stock. I don't know if that type of stock can be re-contoured and repainted. --- John 303.
 
If the barrel is free floating it does not matter. See if the gun shoots first. The spacing could be corrected with a bedding job, ie center the barrel during the bedding.
 
I agree, the only thing that confuses me is that another short action Rem is perfectly centered in the same stock!?
 
Lots of these barrels when installed are crooked and they have lots of other issues like crooked screws etc. As long as it shots don't worry. Savage apparently uses a big hammer to correct crooked barrels. If you want to check put it on a surface plate and take a measurement and then rotate 180 and check again. Don't be surprised and remember what you paid.
 
Looks like, and I may be mistaken as I can only see what the pics show, the right side is beveled and not as straight/square as the left side. Try using calipers on the outside of the forestock and see if the bbl is sitting in the middle. Could be an optical dilusion! the only way to make it look OK is to make the other side the same, but you'll loose the finish on the stock, so leave it alone, shoot it if the bbl is square in the action, etc.
