Barrel obstruction help

Its called a worm. Its meant to pull patches from a muzzle loader barrel.That's a really nice one. Cva and traditions make basic ones that just have two tiny tines.

Fancy ones like that are surprisingly hard to find.. google only turns up a couple with a cursory search.. try a specialty muzzleloading shop? Or a radom blacksmith shop could make one pretty easily if you had to have one like that.

It occurs to me that the OP probably got into trouble trying to hammer the rag through the barrel in the first place, part of an improv cleaning session.

I thought a specialized wad puller would cost at least $40 but I see they're available as cleaning rod attachments for more like $4- clearly the way to go.

I thought you would know better? Rag, a screw on a rod, wine bottle screw tacked to a rod comes to mind, if you aren't into black power burners .
Some times a bigger hammer is not the answer.
Putting a plugged barrel back in the safe for a year is a bit iffy to me.
 
Whew, lotta people weighing in. Thanks very much!

I guess the general consensus is, this should be pretty simple, no real super tricks or anything. I'll probably try to tackle this in the next couple days.

I'll update with what worked for those curious.
 
5/8" dowel, clip the head off a epoxy coat deck screw, pilot hole the dowel, thread it in, picked it out gently. Thank you all, especially tent pole guy who included the helpful picture.

The shotgun is an ancient Agnew & Sons 12ga SxS I inherited a few years ago. Not my bag, but the best clay buster I've got in my arsenal much to my chagrin.
 
Get a length of drill rod and push it out. That's some real metal; not a wimpy cleaning rod. chances are Its not as stuck as you think.

If you use a dowel get ready to start a thread about getting a broken dowel out of the barrel. ;)
 
another way which would be easy would be to buy a hanger bolt that is threaded the same as your cleaning rod and attach it to the cleaning rod

A hanger bolt has a woodscrew on one end and a machine screw on the other end....pretty easy to find at HD etc

I've tried all my different cleaning rods to push it through both ways and the rods were going to give out before it was going to budge.

I was going to get a braising rod or coat hanger next and bend a hook and try to snag it, maybe drag it out. It's pretty much bang on in the middle, I don't have any variation of pliers that would reach... My last ditch is bang it out with an appropriately sized dowel, but I don't want to use too much force until the I'm forced to.

Any clever ideas out there? Soaking it in oil or something, some fancy trick with compressed air maybe, I have no idea. Last ditch idea is a blank and a long string [I'm joking]

Pour water down the barrel let it soak in then try again
