Barrel Porting

Other than looking kinda cool, is there anything to be gained from porting a shotgun barrel? For a 12 ga., what are the usual sizes and patterns for the holes?

I'm concidering this for a short-barreled tactical 1100 I'm building up.

Dlask will be doing it on request for the short barrels. price hasn't been set yet, but it shouldn't be excessive.

i heard it does nothing but make it louder and blind you at night with a big fireball. a big fire ball is cool but i hear thats all thats good about it. it may cut down on recoil a bit but not much to really notice. go to shotgunworlddotcom , they talked about it to death and almost everyone of them came up with the same conclusion. waste of money.

The recoil is reduced somewhat.

It is louder than hell, especially for the people around you. :

Pattern is determine beforehand after it's been tested.

Hole size - larger for combat/tactical and smaller for sports and esthetics.

You MAY have issued with an autoloader.

I have had many comped and ported barrels. The porting does work. It helps stop the muzzle from rising. We have done comparisons of two ( two pistols and two shotguns) identical firearms one ported and the other not and the muzzle on the ported barrel does not rise as much as the unported barrel. I have a 21" barreled Remington 1100 that is both ported and comped. It works great.

Ok, I see the consensus is split. Since Bud says it works with his 1100 21" barrel, I'll give it a try. That, and it's the same barrel.

Can you please post some pictures? I want to port the barrel myself as part of my OJT machining phase.
