barrel re-bore

Basically, the old rifling is reamed out, and the bore brought to the desired size for the new calibre. The rifling is cut. The bore may be lapped before and/or after rifling. Muzzle is crowned, chamber cut.
Reboring can be trickier than making a new barrel.

Yeah, I could well believe it though it is reasonably priced. Home shop drilling is tough, home shop rifling, not too bad. Particularly with the cost of barrels up here it would be good if one could set up for it. I realize a few are, but several years back a few of them had dropped out. I realize it is a reaming process, but how much oil pressure or containments, what kind of reamer, and so forth. I wonder if Pope covers it?

I bought some tools from Cliff Labounty a while ago. He did reboring but I understand is retired now. I recall he would specifically not rebore Sako barrels and some others. I believe some barrels are too hard ... perhaps the hammer forging process creates problems that are not conducive to a rebore. ....I have already told you more than I know... good luck.

barrel rebore

OK Fellas, I got one name for a start. Thanks for that and the other info. This is not something that I just have to get done tomorrow, just a possible idea I was contemplating. Thanks again.

Ron Smith is the only one in Canada that I know of. McPhee and Gaillard don't. Not sure about McLennan. Unless you have a particular reason for keeping that piece of steel (esthetics, hinging, barrel stamp etc.) You are probably further ahead to just go with a new one.

May I ask why you want to re-bore over re-barrel?

I don't know if you were talking to me or not but I have a beautiful commercial FN mauser with rust blueing but i hate the caliber, and would not be able to re-barrel and refinish it for anywhere near that cost.

rebore barrel

The reason for reboring? I have a Savage 99, 22HP, that has worn rifling and I was considering having the barrel rebored to 25 cal.,and rechambered for 25-35. Why? Because my understanding is that a 22HP is nothing more than a 25-35 necked down. The most important reason for even considering such a move is because I inherited a 22HP (in parts) that was a "project underway" of my late father's. The gun was in the middle of being rebarrelled to 300 Sav. but given the low serial number of the gun, I didn't think it would be very prudent to continue in that direction. Simply for sentimental reasons nothing more.! Yes it would be a lot simpler to keep the gun as a 22HP, but at present I am having trouble finding a good used 22HP barrel.

I have three rifles I would like to have rebored: a Mauser type A sporter currently in 8x57I, a Remington 1 1/2 in .32 rf, and a 1905 Ross barrel in .303. Thinking in terms of 9x57 or .375 Nitro (not H&H), .38 something, and .35/.303 (to simulate .35 Winchester) respectively. These barrels all have poor bores.

In the "old days" gunsmiths would bore out a worn barrel and sweat solder in an insert with rifling in it. Does anyone still do that?

Common enough to sleeve a .22rf. Modern adhesives are more likely to be used now, rather than soft solder. I've installed liners in a number of .22s, and it is a straightforeward operation. Lower power centrefires can also be done - .32-40, .38-55, etc. Lining a high powered centrefire barrel is a different situation, and I don't think it would be a good idea.

I did it with a 50-70 and used a loktite intended for bearings (620 maybe) You need to leave about .003" clearance and be fast in getting the liner in. I have a friend who used the same loktite on a centerfire in the 6.5 range but can't remember which one. At least one of Tiriaq's guns is a rolling block and sounds suitable for a black powder caliber liner with loktite.

cheers mooncoon

I did a 50-70 as well. I used an epoxy glue. As to the re-bore there is a guy in Leader Sk. that does it. He has Al Petersen's rifling machine. Cary Stricker is his name. He and I don't see eye to eye as they say but he has the equipment. Mark

Anyone know how I can get in contact with Ron Smith to do a barrel rebore? I cant seem to find him on the interweb.
