here is the original dumb question, im trying to remove the barrel from a cooey bolt action .22,the rifle in question has no real value, except the history, one winter in the 30's it harvested over 300 rabits, many more critters since, the barrel is still in good shape, the chamber is oversize, and the bolt is loose in the receiver, the bolt has been worked so many times that the head space is shot, it spits powder when fired, i plan on re cutting the bolt mating surface in the receiver with a fly cutter in the mill with my rotary table, and building up the bolt handle with a tig, rechambering, etc, my dumb problem ? i cannot budge the barrel, i have tried heat, brass hammer etc with no movement, i could cut the barrel and bore out the stubb on my lathe but would like to have the original extractor cut to duplicate, i know i could impression it with clay or accraglass, but am hoping to pull this barrel in one peice, thinking of machining 2 collars and using 2 forcing bolts to pull the barrel, there must be other folks who have figured out how to remove these barrels, please enlighten me, by the way i am having the same problem with a steel tube gevarm .22 thanks in advance terry.

I don't know a thing about cooeys, but are you sure the barrel is screwed in? I've seen one small caliber rifle where barrel and reciever were all machined from one piece.

The collars and jackscrews should do it. Have you tried heating the receiver ring? You have removed the locking stud?

The Barrel on the cooey single shot is press fit, pretty hard to remove, I have removed one with a big punch once.
I would try a big washer in front of the action, a brass punch, heat, oil, etc.

The COOEY BARREL is a press fit into the receiver with the threaded piece that the stock retaining screw goes into as a barrel locking device. Remove it but don't destroy it, then use what ever to get it apart, none are tidy or easy. In my opinion check EBAY.CA "gunparts " located " in CANADA" AND get a new unfitted bolt. There is one there right now. You may not need to move the barrel back, just move the boltface forward. CHRONOS please post a picture , all the Cooey's I have seen have had pressed in barrels, always like to be informed of something different.

Bearman, I think your explanation fits my Cooey as well, here's the pics you asked:

It was a gift from my grandfather's, it's about 45-50 years old, could be older. Next week it's going to get re-blued and re-crowned. As you can see, the only thing holding the barrel is the screw on the stock. Removing the barrel from the action is a different thing though.
