I just bough myself a S&W mod 19 in 357mag. It's in very good shape, and I figure I got a reasonably good deal on it for the shape that it's in. The only problem with this otherwise perfect handgun is the fact that the barrel is about 1.5 inches too long (it's a 6 inch barrel). getting the work done by a competent gunsmith in the East Kootenays isn't a problem, the problem is, how would you otherwise re-register a handgun that has had the barrel re done. Does the registry care if the barrel has had an inch and a half taken off, but overall the gun is still only restricted?

If you look at your registration card is states the barrel length.

You'll have to inform the CFC that you have changed the length of the barrel.

I've used the services of Barry Jensen of Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC. He has always done the re-registration with CFC when necessary.

Thanks MTF, What I read into that is that there possibly is some paperwork involved. Does it have to be a special gunsmith that is somehow licensed to do those types of things?

Providing one is competent, it's actually very easy these days and the RCMP-CFC will take the owners word with a few pictures showing the new barrel length.

In short, no it's not a problem.

If you have a digital micrometer and can send CFC a photograph of it on the barrel, displaying the reading, that will probably work. I'd check with CFC to make sure they'll accept it, but that's exactly how Barry did it when he re-registered guns he did for me.
