A standoff barrel ( breacher muzzle device ) .

The mossberg with a 18.5 standoff barrel included the muzzle device. So basically a 16.5'' barrel with a 2'' standoff. OAL of the shotgun is measured including the muzzle device.

Now with a normal 14'' barrel. If I add a 2'' standoff ( could permanent or not ).

Will the OAL of the shotgun be measured including the standoff like the 18.5'' version?

Avoiding to get under 26'' here.

Thanks

It should be okay , although some will be along shortly to tell you no , because, the breecher choke can be removed, that being, if its not permanently affixed, which is stupid, because, how is that any different from being able to quickly replace a raptor grip with a standard pistol grip on any mossberg shockwave, thus reducing its OAL to under the magic 26 inches ?

Extended chokes count in oal, they don’t count in barrel length. The same goes for stock spacers or sling plates, recoil pads. So if they add to the oal then they count for the oal length.

Wait a tic, would that include magazine extensions for counting OAL if the mag pokes past?

The real answer is nobody knows. On the one hand, the lab approved the PAR w/folding stock as NR due to the pinned on muzzle device (although it was originally deemed R, and had to be appealed from what I've read). On the other hand I've seen it in writing from the Lab that a screwed on flash hider on a 10/22 does not count towards OAL.

Its not a term that is defined in the firearms act, so there is no set definition. Kinda like variant, it means whatever the #### they want it to mean, and it can change at any given time to suit them.

Sorry OP but nobody can answer that question for you. Would be interesting to see what the lab says though, we asked about the 10/22 about 5 years ago so they might give a different answer now.

Maybe bcuz the 10/22 is semi-automatic? They had to make their made up point on that factor alone, even though it is still a .22. Manual type or anything not semi was {alawyz} supposed be ok.

Semi auto or not should be irrelevant, unless you can point me to where in the law it factors in?

The catch is that there are "interpretations", which are not black and white in the printed law.
Consider the ranch hand lever actions... Under 26" with a 12" barrel, but not restricted, because they are not considered to be handguns. Unless it is one of the 9" barreled versions, which is restricted, because it is considered to be a handgun.
A muzzle device does not count toward barrel length, but has been counted toward overall length. Even if detachable.
So, does the bayonet fixed to a trench gun count toward overall length?

There is uncertainty.
Given that the appearance of these shortguns does tend to attract attention, a degree of certainty would be nice.
