I finally got my s&w m&p 15 but when i was putting it together i noticed that in the barrel it was only marked with 223 rem. I have no issue with shooting .223 rem over 5.56 NATO but i was curious if any other M&P 15 owners noticed the same thing as i though that a gun from S&W would surely be able to handle the 5.56 NATO round.

S&W website gave the specification for MP15 as 5.56/.233, It is not uncommon for manufacturers to drop 5.56 off the barrel stamping to avoid the hassle from ITAR.

So would you say it's safe? I plan on shooting 223 the majority of the time but if a good deal on NATO rounds come along I wouldn't mind picking some up ha

Seeing as .223 and 5.56 are virtually identical, and everyone chambers guns to fit both despite a relevant lack of differences; Yes, I say it would be safe.

I'm just more so worried about the pressure because if it really is just a 223 barrel it should only be able to handle the pressure of a 223 rather than a 5.56
