Barrel swap BLR take down

Good luck.
This is one of the situations more money than brains I think lol.

Why don’t you just buy a 460 S&W lever action and call it a day? Will the deer know a difference ? Because you obviously aren’t target shooting or anything else with a lever gun lol

But at the end of the day, to each their own.
Im with ya on 460 but total ass comment bud, what do you class as target shooting? cause i "target shoot with my 460 s&w ' and would entertain anyone with a scope above my 2moa red dot to try and print the same group. something magic about a big horn Amory lever.
them boys just know what they are doing. 35-45 raptor is cool just not needed. don't mean to be a jackass but sometimes let guys do fun or dumb gun builds haha! cheers

I also don’t own a BLR, but I have been considering buying one in 30-06 and rebarelling to 35 Whelen. I really like this round, and have been getting good accuracy and very high power. Can’t help thinking that a fast action would make this a great set up wherever dangerous game might be encountered.
Would like to know where the barrel extensions you found were sourced. I suspect Australia, would like to know who if you might share this information.
Thank you!

I want to shorten the stock barrel length and go with a bit bigger profile. Plus if I rebore, it takes away from being multi caliber.

Only machining that I foresee at this point is to open up the fore stock for the larger barrel.

I'm actually going to pick up a 308 TD BLR this weekend. Will keep up the thread for sure for those that are following.
Coming up to three months since you stated you would keep this thread going with updates.

What happened?

Yes from Austrailia. Allen Swan gun smithing. Not really a lot of info on their web page, but I did see a multi barrel he build on his Facebook pages. A 300 blk,223 I thing it was. I think its best if you call him directly. He has done all three of the caliber groups now, and found out the hard way as well on his 30-06 that there are actually 3 types on the TD.
Wallz 😃. Any barrel swap BLR. Raptor updates to share 🤷‍♂️ 😊

Nah, been kinda slow and life has taken over a little. Prepped for another 1000M marksman challenge in July, as I missed the one in May, so that took a bit of time as well.

I did, I did, didn't I, but nothing new really to report.

Not looking for sympathy, but my father passed away late April, and been helping deal with all that stuff's for mom. Seven and a half hour drive one way to go help the mother on a few not so busy weekends has chewed up time. Then started a new job in early June, so time has not been on my side. Then found out we ended up with a moose draw this fall, so busy setting up for and prepping for that, so ordering the barrel hasn't been on my radar at all right now. I do have a few smiths in mind, but just need to get in touch with them and see who is the more willing. One I talked to 2 months back wasn't too interested at all, which was a bit dissapoining, but I understand. They may not be geared up for this kinda stuff, plus busy with main stay work for the regular bolt rifles.

Going to be a late fall kinda thing now realistically as much as I would have loved to have it completed this fall. Played with the mags a bit with the new adapters on the action trying to figure out feeding. 3 in the standard 308 mag is going to be problematic, so might be a one in and two under in the mag kinda thing. Won't know for sure until a barrel is on though. The 450 blr mag is too big and will not fit the recvr.

Don't worry I'm too much committed at this point to just drop things, but have considered it and even just looked at acquiring another Ruger #1 to re-barrel into a 450 raptor. Even thought about the encore route, but with the stupid tariffs that kinda puts thing out as my only choice is order direct from the US, as the Canadian dealer is not putting in any orders right now because of that.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, both my folks have passed, it is a difficult time. :(

Thanks for the update! Keep us posted as to what you decide to build. Even a single shot sounds fun.

Take care, my condolences on your loss brother!:)

Thanks so much for the source info on the barrel nuts, and very sorry for your loss.

Well the barrel nuts have landed.

Was able to purchase a 450 marlin magazine that will work perfect for my needs. Tracked down some 45 raptor brass as well.

Was able to push some of my 290 gr barnes TEZ tips into the brass for a comparison with the 450 bushmaster I shoot currently. I lucked out and the longer of them just happens to be magazine max and I can load out uptown there if required. Worst case I might need to fiddle with the feed ramp to get it to run smooth.

Now I just need a rifle and 45 raptor barrel.

Where did you purchase your barrel sleeves ? This is exactly what I'm looking for.

Wallz, I've been looking for a Browning BLR Barrel Sleeve. Could you please tell me where I can purchase one or two ? On my 308 BLR I wanted a picatinny rail attached to the barrel. It holds zero during disassembly & reassembly.

While nothing great to update with, I did play with the magazines a bit more. I think that I will have to make a feed ramp in the 308 mag that is the same as the feed ramp in the 450 mag.

The physical size of the 450 is a tad wider, and longer with a less pronounced slant on the front, so it won't be an easy sway kinda thing. The follower is not the same shape either, as the 450 has the side grooves further in the front of it than the 308. Might have to either 3D print a new follower and feed ramp, or just grind the one in the 308 to make room for the feeding.

This is the 450 mag for reference sake with the feed ramp.

To boot there are not any barrels that are 45 cal out there, much less smiths with 45 raptor reamers. Might have to get someone sooner than later as they will probably have to order a barrel and reamers in.

To add to the confusion when I took out my daughter to the range a few months back, she had a hard time with my 18 lb 6.5CM off the bench. While she did shoot it just great out to 1000m the recoil was still pushing her comfort level. So I have decided to get a build going for her, that ultimately that will take away funds from this build. I know sucks, but priorities.

Now just to decide on the 6BR or the 6GT. I have not shot either one, so have nothing to compare the recoil for her to decide on the caliber. I guess with the 6GT I could always use a lighter bullet and just not hot rod it like I usually like doing. I seem to always go heavy bullets and have them shooting for speed.

Interesting project.
As far as the gunsmithing goes, fitting a barrel to a barrel extension is not much different than fitting a barrel to a receiver. Never worked on a Browning takedown, but have installed barrels on AR-15 and Remington 760 barrel extensions. Instead of a receiver wrench, it is necessary to make a wrench that holds the barrel extension firmly. Metric threads on the barrel shank?

try Barry at Bit of Pieces maybe? iirc he had 45/70 barrels if you live with that twist
Problem with that is I need a barrel that is shooting .452" projectiles and not the .458" from the 45-70. That said I have taken the .458" projectiles and sized them down to the .452" requirements and they shot great in my existing 450 BM. This was the solid copper ones.

Yea threading the barrel onto the extension is not an issue, it is finding a smith with the proper barrel and the reamers at this point. It is basically like an AR type extension. Which is surprising why no one in Canada has felt the need to make any, which baffles me. Only guys I could find reference to is the one in Aus that I ordered from and one in Alaska. It is a machined part and then barrel blued, from what I could tell any ways.
