Hey guys,

Got my first AR, a DD MK18 10.3 MILSPEC+ brand new never fired. First time out at the range today and fully cleaned and lubed. Anyway shot through about 150 rounds today and noticed the barrel smoking at first.

Obviously that was oil and finish burning off, but my question is, should I expect this gun to run hot? I participate in our local tactical club so the drills and stuff tend to use a lot of ammo in a short period of time.

The heat radiating to the hand gaurd was decent but not uncomfortable, so just wondering what I should expect. After all, you can't call for a time out during a battle to let your gun cool down to the touch.

Congrats on the MK18. Sweet rifle!

Yeah, they get hot if you run them hard. Heck, even doing a double 10rnd pistol mag dump will get 'em hot. You need to really go non-stop for a fair bit to get the gas tube red hot, more so than your drills. Ain't nothing to worry about. Get some lube on the BCG wear points and have at 'er, the gun can take the heat and keep on spitting lead. Wear gloves. :)

Don't go crazy and do a 20 mag dump like some people do and melt the gas tube. Though, you have to try pretty hard to get it hot enough to damage something.

I think the Americans discovered that if you shoot 3 mags of 30 shots each on full auto as fast as you can the A2 handguard has a tendency to light on fire. ;) We don't have the option of trying that experiment.

I know for fact a C-7 can have more than 3 30 rd mags (less than 6) fired pretty much full auto as fast as the mags can be changed with no fire...a slightly burnt left hand was the only short term result. Not mine, I wouldn't abuse a fine rifle like that unless the Hordes were coming.
