I have a new Walter Lothar barrel, and was thinking of putting it on a Stevens 200, but not if it needs to have threads re-cut.
Anyone know if this is required?

If it won't fit, what other rifle or action would be good (and cheap)?

Not enough info. What was the Walter Lothar barrel installed on? What caliber was it? The Stevens is a 1.055" x 20tpi barrel and the only other action it will fit is a Savage small shank, which is the "normal" shank size. Not sure if the Mossberg or the Remingtom/Marlin xr7 would fit but they are a clone of the Savage.

The Walter Lothar barrel has never been installed on anything. It is in 7x57, and chambered so all it needs is adjustment for headspace.

I hope I'm not stuck with a Mauser large ring, but if so would appreciate recommendations for a good modern rifle.

Just use a ruler and count how many threads there are in an inch........ or half an inch and multiply by two. Certainly not exact, but will get it close enough for TPI.

For thread diameter you can also use a ruler and tell us if the diameter is greater than an inch or not.

There are only a few combinations of diameter and pitch used in rifles.

First of all a gunsmith MUST install this barrel on anything it ever goes on.
Being 1.094" in diameter and the wrong pitch and probably threaded with a sharp threading tool, the minor diameter is much smaller than the major diameter of the Savage. It wouldn't surprise me to hear the minor diameter is approx 0.940" if it was cut with a sharp pointed threading tool. The total depth of cut for a 12tpi thread using a FULL profile bit is .0526", info from Kennametal. A sharp pointed insert would require a much deeper total depth of cut.

There is no point other than to say the Savage is out, however a Winchester M70 is likely doable but the smith will let you know.
