When shooting 38 sp target loads with my 38/ 357 revolvers I sometimes wonder how warm the barrel can get without causing wear?

Same question for a smith 22 revolver I have using "regular" federal champion jacketed ammo.

I want to keep 2 of my revolvers for a long time.
So I let them cool once they get warm to the touch.

Is this overdoing it?

Every single shot you fire will cause wear to the bore. But rising temperatures will not accelerate the process until the steel reaches temperatures in the hundreds of degrees Celsius. I doubt it would ever be possible to do this with .38 Spl loads, fired six at a time.

I had someone once try to tell me to "slow down" or I'd burnout the barrel on my 10/22... I looked at him and smiled and said "it's a risk I'm willing to take" and carried on.

:)

I'd be more concerned with springs breaking over time than ruining the barrel ;)
