Hey Folks

I'm doing a custom build in .308. My question really pertains to the barrel, is there a hierarchy between Krieger, Lilja barrels et al, or am i just picking apples from apples. What is the difference between contours...HV LV, palma, straight taper fluted and bull. The other question is that ive been told that shooting 155gr bullets is ideal in a 308 (true/false) and what would be an optimal twist rate for this caliber and if i were to shoot 168gr and heavier out of the gun. Im looking at 24-26" barrel......unsure of the rest (contour, twist rate etc)

Apples from apples IMHO. I've shot Rock Creek, Krieger, Shilen, Bartlein and soon Benchmark, never had an issue with any of them.

As for contours, check the manufacturers websites, they normally have a page with measurements. Not really going to make a difference besides weight. Conventional wisdom is that stiffer barrels are more accurate. If this is purely for target, and you not going to carry it, then go heavy.

>190gr = 1 in 10
168 to 185gr = 1 in 11
155gr = 1 in 12

It might be worth finding out the manufacturing process your maker of choice uses. Ie single point cuts, hammer forge or button. The primary and only real use of this knowledge might lead you whether or not flutting can be applied before or after the barrel is made. something about putting metal stress or fatigue into the barrel. but i have a feeling thats only a hearsay thing and i doubt would have that much of a difference.

If interested I might have a stainless Jury 1-10 30cal heavy varmit blank (Very similar to M40/M24 profile).

I shoot 208's in a 1-11.25 long range. No issues.

Read into bullets, BC, etc. 155's are great, but so is heavy. Have to decide what you want to shoot first.

I love the lapua 155 scenars, they performed extremely well in my 700p, but have stopped shooting them, as they are just too darn expensive (for my budget).

ALL quality match bullets in 30cal WORK... they just have specific end uses in mind.

So decide on how you want to use your rifle before worrying about what it will shoot. Once you have your end use goals, twist, chamber, throat length, contour, finished length is a 30sec conversation.

Barrels from all top tier manf work well. Demands for 30cals in the US ensure, any barrel maker is going to put alot of effort to making good 30cal pipes.

I can offer Shilen, McGowen and Krieger... a bunch of options instock too.

Figure out what you want in your hands and how you plan to use it.... the rest is pretty straightforward.
