Or if you have a hydraulic shop press, just make wood blocks to fit your barrel.

Reach out to gunrunner8 on this site - he has two left on the EE, as of 5 minutes ago. I've used one of his vises and his inserts for several years - pulled and installed several dozen barrels (milsurp and sporter) in that time.

I like the little tab spaced to locate the flats on the bolt heads.

Thanks. Didn't want to tack weld the bolts to the bottom block.
I made and sold a few barrel vises like this one. Stopped, because material cost, shop time and delivery (heavy) resulted in a higher price than I thought they were worth.
When making the hole for the sleeve, clamp the blocks together with a spacer, then drill and bore to size. That way, the blocks pull up tight on the split sleeves. With sleeves machined to a decent fit on the barrel, and a sprinkling of powdered rosin, no slippage.

Well, IMHO from engineering point of view external action wrench might crimp the action while barrel is being removed and start seizing the threads.
Also the chance is high to scratch the action finish when slipping occurs.
Rem m700 action for instance has 1.350" OD and 1.062" OD of the barrel tenon so it would be very easy to collapse .144" thick wall.
Internal action wrench doesn't have those faults and doesn't need extra bushings as well.

Roman, I use both types. The internal type, which I purchased from you, as well as a very similar external type as that in the picture.
I always use BRASS .010 shim stock between the jaws of the clamp and the receiver. I use .010 because I have a lot of it on hand.
For some actions, there is no other way to hold them, such as M1 Carbines and Garands that I feel comfortable with. Same goes for the other semi auto actions out there or even some of the lever actions.
On rifles such as an 1871 Mauser, the barrels are so soft you have to be careful not to grip them to tightly.
It isn't so much that you need a lot of clamp pressure on the receiver as to be able to hold it in place while turning it off the barrel shank. That clamp you show in the pic looks pretty good to me. Lots of support on the recoil lug, unlike turning off a Remington receiver.
To each his own though.

Prices for quality steel are beyond ridiculous now. (China made but price pushed up by middle men)
It might take better part of two hours to make one.
Shop time being $120 + tax explaining everything....(tax man takes the chunk of it at every step)
so the only thing to do now is to import the stuff from China for $10 and
sell it for $60 so everybody is happy....
As a result of that Canadian younger generation is unemployed except of course vastly available opportunities in Mc D for instance.

Wheeler Engineering Universal Barrel Clamp Works great and can accommodate a variety of barrel sizes. You still need a vice.

^^This looks like a good design. Does anyone currently use this type of vise block and can tell me what the actual dimensions are? Thanks for all the info guys. I have some time off next week and will figure out which barrel vise I am going to go with. Need to get my project underway, it's been sitting for far too long!!
