Barrell chopping

There are different methods of crowning. File as square as you can, use brass round head screws in an electric drill with abrasive compound to lap the end of the bore. Use a hand turned piloted cutter. Set the barrel up on a lathe and cut the crown profile desired. The latter is the best way, the others will work.
 
Dont no, but I think it would be be hard to a straight enough, accurate enough cut with a hack saw . I belive to recrown there is a recrowning tool you can get from brownell`s
 
Some advice:

Know what the minimum legal length is that you are allowed to cut it to.

Mark it longer than this minimum length.

Measure it again and if correct then cut straight and crown.
 
I wouldn't touch an AIA. Pick up a previously bubba'd rifle for $75, and have at it. You'll have to deal with remounting the front sight. Abbreviated .303 rifles are popular for aglu seal hunting. Rifle is fired pistol fashion.

I have never heard of EDM being used for crowning. It can do interesting profiling, can even be used to rifle pistol barrels, but a lathe is probably the best machine for crowning.
 
Since accuracy can be affected a great deal by the muzzle crown, I would suggest having a competent gunsmith with the proper tools (read lathe) chop and re-crown the barrel.

To cut my 26" Varmint barrel back to 20" and re-crowned cost me a whopping $40.00.

its best to have a smith to cut and crown it, for the $30-45 its alort easier and nicer looking.
also keep a close eye on the legal lengths and where you cut.
as a rule i cut at least an inch on the safe side of the requirments 18.5 is the minimum barrel length to stay legal if you cut or have cut. i wont go less then 19.5". and yes i use a hacksaw for my cutting and have my smith re-crown it for me

Are you afraid it will shrink below the legal limit?
 
A bit off topic but :
What's the best crown to use ? I see there's flat , recessed , 11 degree (?) and I think I recall even seeing a concave rounded one .
What to use , and why ?
Rifle in question : 6.5x55 m96 sporter ( hunting rifle ) .

Brownell's has a new Crown kit that I just read about in Shooting Times a couple of issues ago. Its supposed to be the cat's ass for recrowing barrels. I haven't had the stones, as yet, to turn a hacksaw or bandsaw on one of my rifles. This kit might change that!:)
 
I saw in a video once from Richard's Custom Rifles that it is always best to cut the barrel off with a hacksaw first and then crown in a lathe. I know that is how most have said to do it, but the reasoning is that if you part off the barrel in a lathe you put unnecessary stress on the barrel.
