Barrels for M14 18.5"?

I am interested in building a shorty. Lets say I could theoretically acquire a Smith CrazyHorse 18" barrel or a Krieger 18.5". My guess is that this would make my rifle restricted? As per (b) a firearm that
(i) is not a prohibited firearm,
(ii) has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
(iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner

Any comments?

As long as your barrel is over the 18.5" mark, you're fine. Under it and you'll have to re-register it as a restricted firearm, same as the SA SOCOM rifles.

Alternative to Replacement Barrel

Another way to do this is to have the original barrel cut down and replacement parts installed to make a shorty.

Jeff Smith at Valley Gunsmithing in Petawawa does this type of work.

Snapshot

#1. Is there a supplier of Krieger 18.5 barrels in Canada?
#2. What would one cost?
#3. What would be the barrel twist of a Krieger 18.5 barrel?

Thank you for any help as I'm tryna do a shorty project and don't want to cut the Norinco barrel but rather replace with a better one such as the Krieger.

#1. Not sure. +$25USD for ordering from factory and US export permits.
#2. $340USD unchambered +$60USD for short chambering
#3. 1 in 10, 1 in 11, 1 in 12.

Questar would be an option if you decide you need to bring one in yourself.

Most of us that have cut down our norinco barrels are quite happy with the performance. Nothing wrong with buying a new one if the "usgi or my #### will fall off" bug has gotten you though. ;)

How about the "I have too much money and dont know what to do!" option??? :p

BTW, how much did a barrel chop and rethreading for FH cost???

That comes under the standard "Donate to help buy cariboo_kid a Foxpro" clause ;)

I think it's about $75 or something pretty reasonable from other posts, but don't quote me. I lucked out and mine was done by Alberta Tactical Rifle by the previous owner.

The stock Norinco barrel is quite good with the chrome lining, and people on the us boards would suggest keeping it unless there is a specific reason to change such as wanting a different profile barrel.

Ok I get the whole just CHOP your existing barrel on my norky ... but that would change my twist rate yes/no? Would that affect my accuracy yes/no? I'm still learning about fire-arms here and I'm lovin' the idea's of doing project rifles ... as I want a shorty M14 but want some good accuracy out of her ... that is why I asked what twist rates would be in these Krieger 18.5 barrels?! Some days I have too much $$$ and may spend in a dumb way ... however I think asking about these barrels and accuracy isn't me being an idiot ... but hey that's MY opinion ... hee heee ... :D ;)

Chopping the barrel won't affect twist rate or accuracy. You may find a slight drop in velocity, accompanied by an increase in noise, but for the better handling characteristics, and LCF of the shorty , I think it's a fair trade off.

A quick note about "chop jobs" it has to be done very carefully because the Norc barrel is chrome lined. If not done right the chrome lining will chip at the muzzle and screw up the accuracy.

As far as drop in velocity, even that won't be a big deal. I chrono'ed a 150 gr factory bullet whose specs said it did 2820 from their test barrel, and out of my 18.5" norky shorty it did 2768. I don't know what the average was, just put the one round through cause I was curious.

Port milsurp was somewhere in the low to mid 2600's I think.

I picked up some South African surplus yesterday but it will be a while till I can get a chance to put a few through buddies chrono.

Smith Enterprises, Inc. now ship to Canada...I would assume they would take care of the Canada customs paperwork?? Probably best to check with them first.
