What barrel would you choose?

Depends to an extent what you want them for... Krieger may be overkill for a hunting rifle, and they are only made in heavy contours in stainless. They are unsurpassed as an ultra precision barrel.

Why was you choice of barrels so small for your poll. when there are fellows Like Mic Mcfee, Mc Clennan, and not to mention the other outstanding barrel makers like,Hart,Border,Tru-Flite,Lilja,Bartlien on on on on
I read a post some where where a record was set with a group of 1.58" 5 shot group with a Kreiger barrel and the next best group was 1.78" 5 shot with a Hart barrel rifle.
I know Kreigers are very top notch barrels and I am sure hold many records, but if you think the next time out the fellow shooting the Hart couldn,t beat the guy with Kreiger.give your head a shake!
Most these hand lap match barrels are pretty good, light years ahead of most manufactured guns. you will see when you clean a match barrel compared to factory ones.

I have used Obermeyer, (2)Mc Clennan, Krieger and Bartlien. Next barrel going on is another Kreiger. Not that I feel one was any better then the others just quicker availability.

I have a Pac-Nor pre-fitted 223 Rem, Good barrel. I have a Gaillard 223 Rem and will be buying a 6.5 mm tube for a 260 Rem. The Gaillard barrel is awesome, won't buy anything else.

You didn’t mention Mike Rock Barrels either. I bought one for a precision rifle years ago and it is sub MOA way past a grand. Seems like everyone is copying his 5R profile now days. Also, the Barrels on the STAG arms rifles are exceptional. My AR is a STAG and it will out shoot my small bore rifle at 50 m!

On any given Sunday, ANY of the top match brands can win in ANY discipline.

I have had the pleasure of shooting from a number of brands over the years, both Cdn and US. A good barrel from a good maker is a thing of pure joy.

I offer Shilens as they have many benefits and have a long history of doing very well in top tier competitions. They are well priced

I also offer McGowen who is an up and coming manf with machining talents as good as I have seen. The quick turnaround is very popular.

A good barrel, well machined and installed will shoot as well as you can.

There is no one definitive brand or product despite what we may think. Pick a product and go build your rifle.

If you are like the most of us, this will not be your last and you can then try something else.

Enjoy...

I have about 6 brands of after market barrels on my rifles, but prefer the Canadian made ones, simply because they are easier to get most times, and I like to support the small Canadian builders whenever possible, not because they are cheaper or better than what the Americans or English, or Germans are building.

Of those, I'd get the Ron Smith, but only because I've never tried one...

Of the barrels I have tried: Bartlein, hands down!

I have been installing Shilen barrels on rifles of my own and for others for over thirty years. I have been pleased with every one of them. I bought my first RKS barrel in 1978 and have bought quite a few since then. I have been pleased with all of them as well. When I buy a barrel for one of my own rifles now, it is most likely to be a Shilen because delivery time is excellent and quality is uniformly good. The most accurate BR barrel I ever had was a Hart. The most accurate long range barrel, to date, a Smith. I have not tried a Krieger and don't know if I will get around to it or not. I have a bunch of barrels to wear out first! Regards, Bill.

I am building a 17 Fireball so due to caliber my choice was greatly reduced; I had it down to Krieger or Shilen.
The Krieger was more expensive and I was leaning that way anyway just to try one of their barrels but the wait time of at least 20 weeks cancelled that plan.
I ordered a select match grade Shilen and it should be here this month, I will have loads ready for the gophers for sure.
If it was for a caliber other than 17 I would go for a Gaillard, coolpoolken has 2 rifles with Gaillard barrels on them and I have seen how well they shoot.

The bestest barrels in the world still needs to have top quality match bullets sent down the rifling and.....

Then there is bestest powders, scales, dies, seating depths, uniformers, deburrers, pointers, primers, chambers - leads, throat length, neck diameters.

Stocks, triggers, rings, bases, rests, benches.....

That is another great topic(s) for debate....

Accuracy cannot happen without a great barrel,

But a great barrel without all the other parts of the puzzle is an expensive piece of machined steel.
