Barrels

I see lots on here about barrel lengths, but are most of the better LR rifles being used also heavy barrels ?

You generally want to go as heavy as is necessary/practical/allowed in your application. Something that lives in a rest is obviously going be better suited to more weight than something you have to shoot holding or have to carry around or move with. If you have a specific weight limit, the shorter the barrel is, the heavier it can be. There is a point of diminishing returns with that though... available profiles and blank diameters also limit it.

Basically, make it as long as it needs to be to safely hit the nodes you want to hit with the powder and bullet you want to use, then make it as heavy as you can or are willing to tolerate.

If you want to see some very accurate "hunting" type rifles, have a look at big bore silhouette rifles.

The rules require them to use sport profiles and they shoot 10rds per relay. They can be superbly accurate.

contour does not determine the accuracy potential of a barrel. only its ability to withstand shooting heat before warping.

target rifles will use the heaviest and longest barrel that will make class weight. Why not?

My 45 LB as a 7.62 has a 7/8 x 30 inch barrel on it and it is great for reaching out i have to fine tune it but it is great the way it is as a target rifle and in some cases i would use it for hunting.

While we are talking about it is there anyone out there in Canada or B.C. that still will turn out a barrel for a nice rifle it just needs to be fitted to a enfield receiver i can install it and set it up myself??????

There are numerous barrel makers in Canada. Smith, Gaillard, King, McLennan. Any of these can make a good barrel. - dan
