Elders were talking on local radio yesterday and this morning to a few hunters who spotted 2 grizzly's outside our community. They apparently ran off quite fast when spotted. A hunting I will go ... a hunting I will go ... high ho the dairy'o a hunting I will go ... question I have is do I bring ROCHELLE my Springfield M1A or go with my M1 garand ... decisions decisions! :D

HAHA I though about that but it would be too hard to get off a quad fast enough to shoot ... these buggers take off like a jetplane when spotted here.

Barren Ground Grizzlies tend to be small, sort of like black bears with attitude. Either rifle will be fine, but you know that. They keep saying that there's barren ground grizzlies around here, but until I see one its a myth. Of course I'm not likely to see one sitting here in front of the damn computer. Last summer we had a black bear and a polar bear within a half mile of each other, but the blackie stayed in the bush and the polar bear stayed in the barrens. Adding a grizzly to the mix would be way cool.

Hey Boomer, how you doing in Churchill? The barrenland Grizz's Ive seen shot here in Rankin and Arviat were small like black bears ... the ones i've seen shot in Baker lake were bigger! I'm purdy sure this coming weekend I'll be going outland for a tour and bringing my M14 ... but want to shoot/kill something with my Garand as I never have yet. I'm quite excited to go look for one as the stories I've heard from guys here, Arviat and Baker about these bears were all wicked ... apparently they're quite fast runners and tear up the land as they go, guys have been stalked by them and well I guess they don't act like a polar bear and just walk as if they rule. HAHA. I hope the weekend goes well. Cheers,

Take them both and go get a grizzly or two, are the hides still good this late, you think? Our bears are looking pretty ratty now, I guess it depends on your weather.
Good luck and go kill one for me, I couldn't find one this spring worthy of getting all bloody over. Did kill a couple of blackies out of spite.

I honestly never thought about the hide ... we really don't get them this close to the coast of Hudson's Bay normally ... last couple yrs though some have been showing up in spring and summer. I wonder if the hide would be ok to make a rug or not???

have fun

We encountered several around D'stefanie Lake NWT many years ago while hunting caribou. Another fellow and myself went out on barren ground looking to fill some extra caribou tags while the guides and other hunters were out on lake in zodiacs spotting herds and bulls. 20 minutes after getting back to camp 2 Barren Grounds were spotted following the same path we had just returned on. seems we were mistaken for slow moving funny smelling caribou by the bears who had to investigate. Came within 300 yards of camp and then went around us to far shore of lake. Guide advised later that they had come into camp and destroyed tent platforms and any gear left behind a few days later. Seems we were in their territory!

My friggin quad still hasn't arrived even though it was supposed to come with the rest of my household stuff in my move.

Reminds me that I have to go over and talk to the wildlife guys. Gotta get a fishing license to tide me over until October 15th.
